  • Smoke settles in Sisters Country

    Updated Dec 20, 2011

Folks in Sisters are constantly reminded of the perks of being surrounded by forests. Beautiful scenery, open spaces, and recreational opportunities lure visitors and new residents each year. Last week - and perhaps in weeks to come - Sisters citizens will also be reminded of one of the pitfalls. As smoke fills the high school commons and plagues those in the drive-thru getting a McDonald's fix, some in Sisters are all in a huff. "There are about 500 acres of piles on fire now," said Mark Rapp, fire management officer for... Full story

  • Letters to the Editor 12/21/11

    Updated Dec 20, 2011

To the Editor: In 2000 I passed through Sisters after a veterinary meeting. Like many, I loved the place and started getting The Nugget in North Texas. In 2006 I sold out of Texas and made the jump. Since the move I frequently get asked about the difference between Texas and Oregon. First: Texans think rules are for other people. You've been forming traffic committees since I starting getting The Nugget. I'll fix the traffic later, but small-town Texas would have picked a plan and done it right or wrong 10 years ago. Second:... Full story

  • Outlaws hoopsters face top teams at Phoenix Tournament

    Updated Dec 20, 2011

The boys basketball team faced three tough local teams from the Medford area at the Phoenix Tournament Thursday through Saturday, December 15-17, and ended the tourney with one win and two losses. On Thursday night Sisters defeated the 6A Crater Comets 61-57 in a wild game. Crater is an athletic team and plays a high-risk, high-gain pressing trap full-game defense. That type of play forces opponents into an up-tempo style of play. At the close of the first quarter Sisters... Full story

  • The Ballad of Bad Kitty and the Bluebird of Happiness

Translated from the feline by Jim Cornelius|Updated Dec 20, 2011

They call me Bad Kitty. Like they have ANY CLUE about what life is really like on the mean streets of Sisters. Talking about these hoity-toity humans at The Nugget, see? Take this Mother Teresa. So sweet. So kind. She's nice to everyone and everybody loves her, right? Except she calls me "evil." Gave me my name. Says I hog the food and I should "spread the wealth around a little." Doggone socialist. Get this straight: Yes, I am one of the one percent. I worked my tail off to get what's mine and I'll be dog-slobbered if I'll s... Full story

  • Artistic fire on the streets of Sisters

    Updated Dec 20, 2011

Raku artist James Sant played out his pyrotechnic pottery skills in spectacular fashion Friday night in front of Clearwater Gallery on Cascade Avenue. He placed the pots, glazed by gallery visitors, into the fiery kiln, took them up to 1,800 degrees F. When the glaze looked right, he pulled the pots from the kiln at full heat, waved the bright red incandescent glowing pots in the air, and then plunged the clay pots into a small garbage can full of shredded paper, smothering... Full story

  • Keeping the Posadas tradition alive

    Updated Dec 20, 2011

A bunch of hungry people lined up in Sisters Elementary School on Friday night. The old school tables groaned under the weight of huge silver pots with simmering pozoles, delicious Mexican stews, and plates piled high with homemade tamales. Most of those who came to the Posada celebration freely admitted that their favorite thing about the tradition is the food. The Hispanic women of Sisters delivered. They prepared generous amounts of traditional Mexican dishes like... Full story

  • Running commentary

    Charlie Kanzig|Updated Dec 20, 2011

There is nothing like a good running dog. For virtually my entire adult running life I have had the pleasure to own dogs that love to get out and run with me. My family has owned only Airedale Terriers, which happen to be on the Runner's World list of best running dog breeds. We've had five in all over the years - Heather, Murray, Scout, Annie, and Reuben. Sadly, about a month ago, our beloved Annie "Forest Runner" died due to complications from surgery after giving birth to n... Full story

  • Miracle bird back on the wing

    Jim Anderson, Correspondent|Updated Dec 20, 2011

Red-tailed hawks can make fatal mistakes: They perch on power poles and get shot by people who just have to shoot something. They can be electrocuted when they perch on electrical transmission pole cross-arms. Sometimes they swoop down on a rabbit or rodent crossing the highway, and are smacked by motor vehicles. Gary Landers, operator of Wild Wings Raptor Rehab facility in Sisters, shared an adventure he had with a red-tail that crashed through a window at Culver Marine, just... Full story

  • Eugene author uses a Sisters setting

    Updated Dec 20, 2011

Shelley Houston is a Eugene author whose love of the Sisters area compels her to sprinkle local sites and flavor into her books. Her recent murder mystery novel, "Julia, Coming Home," paints a warm picture of Sisters with veiled references to Main Avenue, Sisters Coffee and other familiar spots. The resemblance of the fictional town of Sage Meadows to Sisters in the book is immediately obvious, and Houston drew from her many visits to her favorite spot east of the Cascades. Th... Full story
