  • Letters to the Editor 12/22/2010

    Updated Dec 21, 2010

To the Editor: In last week's Letters to the Editor, Mr. Kenneth Ehlers explained to those who do not understand the meaning of marginal cost of production with regards to water production. I agree with his assessment totally. I am a resident of Squaw Creek Canyon Estates just off Wilt Road north of Sisters. Currently, the owner of the company who supplies our subdivision's water is asking for, and the PUC (Public Utilities Commission) staff have submitted, a 109.5 percent increase in water rates over 2009 rates to the... Full story

  • Sisters gets a glimpse of Gutenberg College

    Updated Dec 21, 2010

If there were any skeptics at a public meeting hosted by the City of Sisters and Gutenberg staff last week, they either stayed quiet or came away convinced. The tiny Christian liberal arts school based in Eugene is seriously exploring a move to Sisters (see related story, page 25). School staff and students offered the Sisters community a chance to learn more about the college at a Thursday evening meeting at Sisters Library. "I must admit that I was cynical when I went into the meeting with the Gutenberg College people, but... Full story

  • Sisters man triumphs in Baja race

    Updated Dec 21, 2010

In the still of the night, racing his motorcycle across the stark Mexican desert at full throttle during the brutal Baja 1,000 off-road event, Greg Willitts' thoughts often turned to the surreal. "The landscape is a blur," he said. "You see red taillights winking in the fog and dust. You worry about breaking down and going fast. All that brought you here and all the time and money. If you crash you have to sleep with the bike or find a rancher with a truck. You're excited to... Full story

  • Birding the world

    Jim Anderson, Correspondent|Updated Dec 21, 2010

Tom Crabtree has been birding since he was six years old. In order to pursue that passion, he heads up the law firm of Crabtree & Ramsdorff in Bend, where he's practiced law since 1981. When he's not in the courtroom serving as public defender, you'd have to search for him at the edge of the willows along the Deschutes River, looking for warblers, counting snow geese at Summer Lake Wildlife Management Area, or pussy-footing around one of the thousands or more locations... Full story

  • New councilor holds key to mayor selection

    Updated Dec 21, 2010

Incoming Sisters City Councilor David Asson finds himself in the challenging position of potentially being the swing vote on a city council that is clearly divided along philosophical lines 2 to 2. Encouraged to run for council by Mayor Lon Kellstrom, Asson initially served as the treasurer of the political action committee (PAC) that swept Kellstrom, Pat Thompson and Jerry Bogart into office in 2008. However, Asson opted to run his 2010 campaign separate from the PAC, resigning his position as PAC treasurer early in the... Full story
