To the Editor: What a wonderful program I witnessed at Sisters Athletic Club last Friday afternoon. Sisters High School Life Skills students are allowed access to our Sisters Athletic Club pool for swimming lesson and water skills enrichment experience that I'm sure changes lives. As I viewed the activity in the pool, I was amazed at all the excitement and wondered what was going on. The joy these students were sharing was worth every minute I wasn't allowed in the pool. It seems that Tate Metcalf, Sisters Athletic Club CEO,... Full story

At last week's workshop, Council revisited the fee schedule for public events held in Sisters parks. This is a discussion that has been ongoing as part of the review of licensing for public events and transient merchants. Council had directed staff to analyze the actual costs to the City, compared to the existing fees being charged applicants who wish to hold a public... Full story
This winter's much-anticipated El Niño phenomenon has not been behaving exactly as anticipated. As fall approached, atmospheric scientists were watching developments in the tropical Pacific Ocean. A large batch of unusually warm water had materialized that stretched from the International Date Line eastward to Peru. It was a signal that the first El Niño in six years was on its way. And if it merged with the warm blobs of water already in place in the eastern... Full story

We are very excite... Full story

I often wish all the sentiment, generosity, and good will of the holiday season could be spread out over all 365 days of the year. Instead, those qualities more often encompass about one month, from Thanksgiving through Christmas. Imagine the difference it would make in so many lives if our spirit of care and giving were extended to our neighbors and the world all year long. The sense of frustration I feel about the current state of affairs here in the U.S., as well as... Full story
My wife passed away in May of 2014, at which time our family was living in Portland. About eight months after she died I lost my job. It felt like defeat after defeat. I immediately thought about moving home where my parents live, but everything in me desired to stay in Portland to continue our established way of life. You see, I was born in Bend and raised in Sisters. I graduated from Sisters High School in 2003 and left fairly soon after that, as many young people do. So, for me the thought of returning fell into the last... Full story
At this point of my 87 years living on this beautiful old Earth I'm so used to the phone ringing at 11 p.m., nothing surprises me anymore. I can remember when it rang at quarter to midnight when my son Caleb was beginning to show his prowess and intense sense of adventure during his early driving years. I picked it up and asked, "Is there any blood?" "No blood, dad," Caleb responded, "but the front-end of the Volvo doesn't look too good." So, last week when it rang at about... Full story

So many folks are fixated on training dogs that they forget about their feline friend - or figure that their cat just is too independent to train. Most people believe that cats can't be trained because they don't seem responsive to the many methods used to train dogs. But cats do respond to training! In fact one of the first scientific studies highlighting the importance of reinforcement in animal behavior was done with cats. The first step to training Kitty is to understand h... Full story
Fear has never been a good advisor, neither in our personal lives nor in our society. -Angela Merkel Peter Salem was a Muslim who fought at Bunker Hill at the beginning of the Revolutionary War.
