  • Sisters is socked in for the holidays

    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Dec 23, 2008

Folks in the Sisters Country have begun to wonder if it is ever going to stop snowing. For the past week, storm after storm has dropped the white stuff over the Sisters Country, accompanied by frigid temperatures which ensured that the snow would stick around. Most roofs in Sisters are carrying about two feet of snow - and icicles just about that long. Hoodoo Mountain Resort opened last week with 37 inches of snow, with more coming down by the hour. The Autobahn Tubing... Full story

  • Hotel on hold for a month after commission meeting

    Kathryn Godsiff, Correspondent|Updated Dec 23, 2008

Plans for a new hotel in Sisters are on hold for a month after the applicant agreed to take another crack at the plans. That decision came in a marathon session of the Sisters Planning Commission on Thursday, December 18. A new commercial/residential development on the north side of Sisters won approval, but it is likely that economic conditions will prevent either project from going forward immediately. The city's planning department recommended both the New Sisters Village Hotel and Black Butte Crossing projects for... Full story

  • Letters to the Editor 12/24/2008

    Updated Dec 23, 2008

To the Editor: Re: "Chasing deer is a bad idea," The Nugget, December 17, page 1): It is a crime, maybe not in the legal sense, that this incident even took place. The fact that the kids were chasing the deer because they thought it was 'fun,' and it resulted in injury or death, is a crime. It seems to be a very 'cavalier' approach to this incident. Maybe some community service is needed by these 'kids having fun,' to realize they just took a life. So, would the deer had been killed if it 'turned' on these 'kids just having... Full story

  • Weather hinders wrestling tournament

    Rongi Yost, Correspondent|Updated Dec 23, 2008

Severe winter weather hindered teams from attending Summit's Eye of the Storm Tournament December 19-20. Only three of the nine teams made it to the tourney and they opted to compete in dual meets. The Outlaws lost 60-21 to Summit and 42-17 to La Pine. Coach Jeff Smith told The Nugget that injuries and holiday vacation plans reduced Sisters to filling only seven of the 14 weight classes. Short squads sealed the Outlaws' doom. Kody Johns was the lone Outlaw to win both of his matches. Johns defeated Spencer Wilson of La Pine 8... Full story

    Updated Dec 23, 2008

Steven George of the Oregon Department of Wildlife contacted The Nugget in the wake of a story about a deer that was fatally injured after it was chased across ball fields by a group of middle school boys. (See "Chasing deer is a bad idea," The Nugget, December 17, page 1). Sheriff's deputies are not planning on citing anyone in the incident, noting that there was no intent to cause harm and thus no crime. However, George told The Nugget that "it is illegal to chase or harass wildlife without a permit from ODFW. This indeed... Full story

    Katy Yoder|Updated Dec 23, 2008

The Sisters Folk Festival has been bursting at the seams trying to store all of the equipment needed to run a year-round cultural arts organization. With one 12-by-12-foot storage shed behind the Sisters Art Works building, it became a real challenge for staff to get to anything easily. The festival needed a second storage shed. With a little creative thought and the generosity of Mike Ilg, owner of Investors Lending Group of Salem, the new storage shed has become a reality.... Full story

  • Outlaws win two on the hardwood

    Rongi Yost, Correspondent|Updated Dec 23, 2008

The boys basketball team held on to secure a 58-56 victory over the White Buffaloes at home on Tuesday, December 16, and three days later easily defeated Crook County 54-38. Madras likes to play a fast-paced game. In Tuesday's game against the White Buffs, Sisters' strategy was to take that speed away, slow down the tempo and control the pace of the game. The Outlaws game plan worked and at the half Sisters held a two-point lead over Madras at 31-29. In the third quarter the Outlaws' defense held the White Buffs to only... Full story

  • Hasty Team has year of rescues, accomplishments

    Updated Dec 23, 2008

The year 2008 has been a memorable one of rescues and accomplishments for the Camp Sherman Search and Rescue Hasty Team. "What impressed me the most was their training," said Tori Hall, who was rescued last September after becoming lost in the woods of Camp Sherman. "They worked as a team, each taking over a part of my care. One person held my head, another kept me warm. They were communicating with the ambulance team as to their whereabouts. It was a big weight lifted off my shoulders. After 12 hours I couldn't fight any... Full story

The Lady Outlaws basketball team played even with the White Buffaloes in the final two periods of the game on Tuesday, December 16, at Madras, but lost the battle 56-48. Madras held a six-point advantage over the Outlaws at the end of the first quarter with a score of 17-11. The White Buffs outscored Sisters by two in the second period and went up 31-23 at the half. • How the penguins saved Christmas

    Updated Dec 23, 2008

With a wag of his finger Santa admonished the crowd, "Whose idea was it to build a fire in the fireplace? I was supposed to come down the chimney." Nevertheless, he passed out gifts to the children. Santa already knew who'd been naughty and nice. He didn't need any list. Several members of the community received handwritten invitations from Black Butte School students announcing a Christmas event: If you come you could meet a flock of 20 fine-feathered penguins who would tell... Full story

Here in Sisters there are many traditions we have brought with us from our families. Along with trees, lights, and candy canes, the folks here celebrate Chri... Full story

    Updated Dec 23, 2008

    • Hats off to the folks who man the plows. When the snow falls as hard as it's been falling in Sisters Country the past couple of weeks, clear roads become a precious commodity. The lifelines we take for granted to drive to work, to get to the grocery store and to get out to play in the snow require constant attention - and it's a dedicated bunch who keep them plowed. From ODOT crews on the highway to city crews inside the city limits, from county crews to local maintenance men who plow the streets of our... Full story

    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Dec 23, 2008

After years of waiting, Sisters will finally have a bike/pedestrian path along Highway 242 from Hood Avenue to Sisters Middle School. The path was part of an agreement that grew out of the siting of a gravel mining operation near Trout Creek off Highway 242 west of Sisters in 1996. Hap Taylor & Sons - now Knife River - agreed to create the path as part of the approval of the mining operation. However, the actual building of the path got bogged down for more than a decade in... Full story

  • Big owls get a big home

    Jim Anderson, Correspondent|Updated Dec 23, 2008

Last week was a big time for 14-year-old Jessie Thornton of Sisters, a very curious young man with a passion for owls. He's one of the few - very few - people that I know who can look at a photo of one of the 15 owls that move around Oregon and accurately name the owl. About a year ago, Jessie and his family came to this old geezer asking about a project Jessie could take on that would benefit the owls that live within the forests around Sisters. In the course of our... Full story

While the literal effects of the Red Bow promotion were mixed, the downtown merchants seem pleased overall with the feeling the program engendered. "I thought it was great," said Janet Brockway, owner of Bedouin. Brockway said the Friday night extended hours weren't the main... Full story

  • Backcountry tours considered for Sisters

    Craig Eisenbeis|Updated Dec 23, 2008

The Forest Service is considering granting a permit for commercial wintertime wilderness tours in the Sisters area. The idea has been tossed around for a few years; but now it looks like the plan could become a reality as early as next winter. "We're just advertising for applicants at this time," said Jeff Sims, Lands Forester for the Sisters Ranger District. Sims explained that people have been inquiring about conducting winter backcountry tours in the area for quite some time, so the Forest Service decided to actively... Full story
