  • The responsibilities of the gun culture

    Updated Dec 24, 2012

There can be nothing more grotesque than the slaughter of school children. The nation has recoiled in revulsion at the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Nobody wants to see this happen again ... and again and again and again. So the national dialogue turns to gun control. Some want a ban on "assault weapons" while gun-rights advocates argue that a ban is cosmetic, ineffective or actually counterproductive. Some come at this issue with entrenched ideological positions; others plead for... Full story

  • Letters to the Editor 12/26/2012

    Updated Dec 24, 2012

To the Editor: The ban on assault weapons is not a rational issue. Don't believe for one moment that you can convince someone who holds the view of the unlimited right to purchase weapons of any type that assault weapons should be banned. Tired of feeling helpless, I decided to send out an email to my whole email list (knowing well that it included some rather conservative friends). I anticipated a few people asking me to take them off their list. What I did not anticipate was the landslide of emails from people saying "I am... Full story

Keranen was a first-team all-league selection for defensive line, and was also a second-team pick for offensive line. Coach Gary Hedin said, "Mitch was a dominant player on both sides of the football. He forced other teams to make adjustments on how they blocked to account for him beating any one-on-one block. Offensively, he could collapse a side of the defense and allowed our running game to be... Full story

  • Oregon has strong interest in weather watching

    Ron Thorkildson|Updated Dec 24, 2012

We're all affected by the weather. More people watch the weather segment of the television newscast than any other portion to learn about any possible inconvenience that the elements may impose on their planned activities. The Oregon chapter of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) is now the largest local chapter in the country,... Full story

  • Andy Stahn's summer adventures

    Jim Anderson, Correspondent|Updated Dec 24, 2012

The Stahn family moved into their new home at Sun Mountain when their third son Andy was a third-grader. He's all grown up now - and he spent the summer of 2012 fighting fire and doing a hundred other things he never dreamed of doing.
