The home-ec room at Sisters Middle School was redolent of the sounds and smells of a family kitchen recently as clusters of students chopped apples, measured out sugar, flour and spices, then mounded their mixtures into pie crusts they had rolled out by hand the previous day. All the while, they chatted and laughed and helped each other. "Does anyone remember what the flour does?" asked Rebecca Sokol. "It makes it thicker," responded a boy. As a recurring special guest in Kit... Full story
A volunteer shouted out a list of needs - a family with pets. Across the Sisters Elementary School commons, volunteers of all ages sprang into action. A couple loaded up a food cart with shopping bags full of foodstuffs before steering it over to a table loaded down with frozen turkeys. Boy Scouts hoisted bags of dog and cat food into carts and pushed them to the doors, where grateful families trundled Christmas dinner, a load of pet food and a bag of toys out to waiting... To the Editor: As I listened on TV the other night about the young American scientist who, "just to see if he could do it" (actual quote!), created a flu virus so deadly that it would kill 60 percent of any people contracting it, all I could think was that if he was an Iraqi, an Iranian, an Afghani or other than an American, CIA would be dedicated to his extinction! Instead, what did we do? We ordered two or three of his "critical pages" to be deleted! I seem to recall that it was a frustrated (Pakistani) atomic scientist... Full story
The Military Parents of Sisters wrote: A Happy New Year to all our troops! For those who have grown up here and are serving across the globe, to each individual who served our country in times past and now calls Sisters Country home. You have given so much and ask nothing in return. God bless you all. We salute you! Sherry Munion was shopping for a used couch on limited means when she encountered Cheryl and Mike Barkley. The Barkleys declined to... Full story

The longer I live, the more I wish scientists would succeed with induced hibernation, especially for old duffers like me. I hate winter! Well, not really... I do enjoy going out with my family getting in the winter wood, something I've been doing almost all my life. When I was a kid we had a huge wood-burning furnace in the basement of the New England farmhouse where I grew up. Woodcutting started in October in Connecticut, with oak and elm being the dominant species used for... Full story
The new year brings moon-lovers a treat: seeing the moon enter its first quarter twice in one month. The month will start off with the moon in its first quarter on January 1. This means the moon's right half will be illuminated. The moon will wax into its full phase, where its entire surface will be lit up, on January 9. By January 16 the moon will wane into its third quarter, where only the left half of the surface is illuminated. The sky will become dark and moonless then wh... Full story
