Some 190 Sisters Country families - including 425 pets - enjoyed a holiday dinner with all the trimmings last week, thanks to an extensive volunteer effort on the part of the Sisters Kiwanis Club, the Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire Department, The Nugget and a wide range of community organizations and individual volunteers. The club and other volunteers distributed food packages on Wednesday, December 23. "It just went great," said Kiwanian Barbara Johnson, who assists Naomi Rowe... Full story

  • A year of controversy, achievement in Sisters

    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Dec 29, 2009

11 started with a roar - the roar of wind. A New Year's Day windstorm tore off roofs, blew down trees and knocked out power to residents in the Cloverdale area. Perhaps it was an omen of a tumultuous year to come. The Sisters Country already faced a tough year as the national economy cratered and the real estate market froze like a Sisters Country pond on a subzero day. Businesses throughout Sisters, from Realtors to merchants to manufacturers felt the pinch of hard times... Full story

  • Protect your pets: It's the law

    Updated Dec 29, 2009

With dogs well integrated into our busy daily lives, especially here in canine-friendly Central Oregon, it's wise to review some of the laws and procedures regarding pet health and safety. Many of us cringe at the site of a loose dog in the back of a pickup or hanging precariously out a rolled-down side window. The dangers may seem self-evident but the practice persists. If there's no room inside a vehicle, a dog should be placed in a secure crate in the back. Whether in the back of a minivan or SUV or the bed of a pickup, a... Full story

  • Letters to the Editor 12/30/2009

    Updated Dec 29, 2009

To the Editor: I am delighted to support the McKenzie Meadows Senior Campus as an asset to our city. I have especially enjoyed the coming together of interested parties to work out not only an urgent care clinic, but to see how it might be shared with a school clinic. I have been delighted by the open reception to my suggestion for a wider bike/pedestrian path in the west side park as well as the willingness to look into outdoor exercise stations for the over-50 crowd. I was surprised to learn at one of the meetings that the... Full story

  • Running commentary

    Charlie Kanzig|Updated Dec 29, 2009

I got my New Year's resolution for Christmas this year when my daughter Claire presented me with a beautiful running calendar, complete with an "activity log" and a place to record my weight. As a runner who will turn 50 in 2010 and who needs to drop some pounds, it was a perfect gift. I have remained inspired in the days since then and actually made up a preliminary plan of some races to run in the first half of this year. My research led me to writing a New Year's column for the rest of you runners out there that includes... Full story

  • Volunteers beautifying the Sisters Library

    Jim Anderson, Correspondent|Updated Dec 29, 2009

Walking into the Sisters Library any time of the year is always fascinating, thanks to the volunteers who beautify the lobby's display cabinets. A display might be a collection of locally made, hand-made crafts by a local artist that are on display for the Friends Annual Art Exhibit (January 22 to February 25, 2010). It could be the collection of David Uttley's African art pieces, Leart Jett's custom-made jewelry or, this holiday season, an assortment of candles set up by... Full story

  • Sisters Outlaws win two, lose one on the hardwood

    Rongi Yost, Correspondent|Updated Dec 29, 2009

The young Outlaws squad recorded a 49-41 win at home over Crook County on Friday, December 18, and a day later suffered a 61-32 loss at Central. Three days later Sisters earned a victory on the road. The Outlaws beat Burns in a final score of 57-45. In Friday's game, Sisters outscored Crook County in both the first and second quarters and held a 23-16 lead at the half. It was a tight second half with the Outlaws only outscoring the Cowboys by one, but Sisters lead in the first half helped to secure the win. "It was a fun... Full story

Anyone who's had the good fortune to encounter Melvin Herburger knows he believes what he espouses. According to authors Rodd Wagner and James K. • Citizens can help shape Sisters' future

    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Dec 29, 2009

Lisa Young is looking for a couple of people interested in shaping what Sisters will look like in years to come. The City of Sisters finance director is recruiting city residents to fill two vacancies on the city's budget committee. That may sound like dry, number-crunching work, but under Young's direction, the budget committee has taken on a more active role in shaping the city's destiny. "I'm doing stuff where they're a lot more involved in the budget process," Young said.... Full story

  • Eating away the winter blahs

    Jim Anderson, Correspondent|Updated Dec 29, 2009

Winter is a tough time for many forms of wildlife. Mule deer, for example, must dig out their winter fare of bitterbrush buried in snow. They also have to find thermal cover every night to ward off those night-time temperatures that can plummet to way below zero. On the other hand, there is a group of birds that have it made: the accipiters, otherwise known as "bird hawks." Like most birds in our latitudes, their downy underwear keeps them warm, and their winter food, small bi... Full story

  • Yurts are warm retreat in Sisters backcountry

    John Givot|Updated Dec 29, 2009

Two backcountry ski huts, tucked in underneath a stand of old-growth hemlock trees on the far edge of frozen Three Creek Lake, have been a decade in the making. Gabe Chladek and Shane Fox met while working as wilderness rangers for the Forest Service in Sisters, in the late 1990s. During long days in the mountains they began dreaming of a hut system to better access the backcountry skiing in the Three Sisters Wilderness. They put together what Fox called an idealistic... Full story

  • Chamber reports healthy season for businesses

    Updated Dec 29, 2009

The Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce says that it appears that Sisters Country businesses faired well during the holidays this year.
