"Sales were up 25 percent over last Christmas," said Ron Bliven, meat department manager at Ray's Food Place in Sisters. Hours of persistent phone calls to three states reunited him with siblings he hasn't seen since his early childhood. The 24-year-old Sisters man knew his father had two children from a previous marriage -- his sister Tara and brother Parker.   • Sled dog races coming to Sisters

    Sled dog racing will take over Sisters during part of the Atta Boy 300 Oregon World Cup next Tuesday and Wednesday, January 6-7. This is a "stage race" spread over eight days. Two of those stages take place in the Sisters backcountry, recently blanketed with heavy snow. In a stage race, each of the days features a complete race in itself, rather than one long race of many days, such as the Iditarod in Alaska. Equipment operators swarmed around town plowing streets and parking areas Monday morning as the flakes continued to fall, swiftly covering their work.   • USFS seeks comment on salvage

    Deschutes National Forest officials are seeking comment on a proposal for salvage logging, reforestation and fuels treatment on portions of the forest burned in the Eyerly Fire. The blaze occurred 20 miles north of Sisters in July 2002 on the Sisters Ranger District and scorched 23,573 acres. The draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) analyzes three alternatives in detail.   • Robbery suspect caught

    Sheriff's deputies arrested 16-year-old Andrew Thomas Sherrell of Sisters after an investigation into a purse snatching at Ray's Food Place parking lot on Friday, December 19. The arrest was made on December 29. Sherrell was lodged at Deschutes County Juvenile Detention Center on one count of third-degree robbery, one count of second-degree theft and one count of third-degree theft.... Full story

    - A Sisters couple got a little too enthusiastic with their holiday partying and were arrested after spinning their cars in a parking lot and onto the street. Both had blood-alcohol counts well over the legal limit. - A man with a scope was reported going into people's driveways.
