    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Dec 30, 2008

The Sisters Country is a winter wonderland, offering Nordic skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling across some of the most compelling terrain in the world. But a day of winter play can quickly turn into disaster. Weather is unstable and changeable and an accident or getting lost in the backcountry can be deadly. Wayne Morgan, coordinator of the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue Unit, sees the results of winter adventures gone awry and he has witnessed some... Full story

  • SOAR becomes Sisters Park & Recreation District

    Updated Dec 30, 2008

After a year in the works, SOAR will officially be renamed Sisters Park and Recreation District (SPRD) on January 1. The name change came out of a strategic plan and community survey that showed a lack of awareness of SOAR. "We really found that a lot of people were not familiar with SOAR," said SOAR Executive Director Carrie Ward. "A lot of people have the impression that it was primarily for kids only and a lot of people had the impression that we were for underprivileged kids or at-risk kids only... I think more people... Full story

The Sisters Ranger District reported .53 inches of precipitation over the weekend and rain continued to fall, turning to snow on Monday morning. Chris Sabo, Trails Supervisor for the Deschutes National Forest, said that conditio... Full story

  • 2008 was a year of changes in Sisters

    Jim Cornelius, News Editor|Updated Dec 30, 2008

Sisters saw a lot of change in 2008. Some of it was tied to national trends, especially a real estate market that has slowed to a crawl in comparison to the heady days of 2007. But most of Sisters' changes were self-generated. On the political scene, the voters made changes on the city council, voting out Mayor Brad Boyd and voting onto the council Jerry Bogart and Pat Thompson who, along with Lon Kellstrom, promise a change in attitude toward economic development. The new... Full story

Sisters retailers faced a nearly perfect storm of trouble this Christmas season, with a tanking economy and weather that kept a lot of people either indoors or busy digging out from under mountains of snow. However, all things considered, Sisters' merchants seem to feel like they emerged from the critical holiday run-up in pretty decent shape. • Letters to the Editor 12/31/2008

    Updated Dec 30, 2008

To the Editor: I thought I should share this piece of information since The Nugget ran an article on "Fred" from Estonia. He was the very successful door-to-door salesman that sold amazing tutorial books to over 500 of Sisters residents. Although I did not sign up for the on-line program, my checking was charged $19.95 last month and again this month. Two other families I asked were charged this mystery charge also. Here is the number to cancel the on-line program which you may not have signed up for either: 1-888-551-5901.... Full story
