A special place for community
There's a special place in my heart for SPRD. Two years ago, my family set out from Portland in a tiny travel trailer, wandering beaches, deserts, and mountains. I'd fallen in love with Sisters during an artist residency at Caldera. Now we set up camp in the forest nearby, hoping this would become home.

Climate change is everyone's problem
The average citizen has no idea what is causing the climate to change, how fast it is changing or how this is impacting them. Many people believe that CO2 emissions from power plants are the primary contributor causing the atmosphere to act like the glass on a greenhouse. The reality is that the CO2 emissions from cars are essentially equal to that of power plants in the U. S. This makes every driver of an internal combustion engine vehicle a contributor to the problem. Car CO2 emissions do not just dissipate on the ground, they migrate up to the lower atmosphere where they can persist for up to 1,000 years.

Airport is an outstanding community asset
We attend the Sisters Airport 4th of July Fly-In, no matter what. This community event started six years ago to celebrate the airport makeover, including the re-paved runway, new hangars, offices, and aviation fuel. The festivities start at 7 a.m. with pancakes, the buzz of planes arriving, and the rumble of classic cars for the hot-rod show. The Sisters Fly-In is just one of the many ways Benny and Julie Benson contribute to our community.

CANNABIS - yes or no?
Editor's note: David Asson is a Sisters City Councilor. He notes that all comments in this article are solely his own.

Four years ago, in November 2014, Sisters voted narrowly to permit marijuana dispensaries to open for business, as did the entire state of Oregon.

Kicking a bad habit
I recently had occasion to chat with a local colleague about the tone of political discussion these days.

SPRD is turning 21
The Sisters Park & Recreation tax district turns 21 next year. We are eight long-time Sisters Country residents who helped raise the Sisters Park & Recreation District since its infancy. As SPRD reaches adulthood, so to speak, we believe it is time for the taxpayers of Sisters Country to recognize that SPRD has grown into a mature, multi-purpose organization by supporting Measure 9-120, the local option tax measure on the May ballot.

Transmissions, tires, bonds and levies
I remember vividly when my dad sat me down as a 15-year-old and told me he would help me get my first car.

"I will match what you can earn to buy a car," he said.

What did I do? Found the cheapest car I could, with barely a working transmission, to get one as soon as I could. I named it "Sweet Thing.'"
