Running commentary
I have to be honest up front on this column: I have run the Hood-to-Coast Relay a number of times and also helped guide high school runners for many years in the Portland-to-Coast High School Challenge that runs in conjunction with Hood-to-Coast. What I have never understood - until I talked to Kathy Kemper-Zanck and Chris Davenport - is why anyone would ever take part in the Portland-to-Coast WALK.

Boys show spark at Philomath cross-country meet
Kolby Spink of Newport took the pace out hard at the Paul Mariman Invitational on Saturday, October 6. He must have been largely unaware of the battle taking place behind him for the runner-up spot. On the other hand, Ethan Hosang of Sisters, running a patient, smart race, was keenly aware as he moved up into the top four midway in the 5,000 meter race. He put the hammer down over the last 1,000 meters in his quest for second place.

Outlaws race at Nike Portland XC
In the words of Head Coach Josh Nordell, running a quality 5,000-meter requires a certain complicated sophistication.

Niebergall will take reins as head girls basketball coach
Brittaney Niebergall practically grew up with a basketball in her hand. She has memories of herself at three years old playing basketball in the driveway with her brother Tommy. She played basketball from three years old all the way through college, has accrued numerous accolades - and she is excited to bring her knowledge of the game to the girls basketball program here in Sisters.

Clear Lake, the perfect fall hike
Unless a fall trip to New England is on your agenda, your best bet for viewing the brilliant leaf colors of autumn is a visit to Clear Lake. This is always my favorite local fall hike. Heck, it's everyone's favorite fall hike around here, and long-range weather forecasts suggest that there are still more excellent fall hiking opportunities to be enjoyed in the days ahead.

What's going on with the Jefferson Lake Trail?
Over the last few years, I've heard multiple conflicting stories about the status of the Jefferson Lake Trail in the far northern extremity of Deschutes National Forest. This trail closely parallels the out-of-sight Jefferson Creek, which forms the southern boundary of the Warm Springs Indian Reservation.

Muffy Seaton: A driving force
The adage "don't put the cart before the horse" may be old, but it's still true. Just ask local carriage driving expert Muffy Seaton. She's spent most of her life training, driving and judging carriage driving competitions around the world.
