In high school, the winter season for me meant running after school or in the early morning alone, often in darkness. An offer from the wrestling coach to join the team for some road work sounded like the perfect way to break up the loneliness, so I found myself hopping in the mini-bus with a bunch of guys who had no love for running. The situation was one of those classic high school scenes in which a bunch of young men try to hide their dread about what is being asked of them. But as the bus moved further and further from t... The dachshund that you share your one-bedroom apartment with is overweight. Could it be because you work part-time and Fido hangs out on the couch most of the day without exercise? Dogs, like humans, need daily exercise to live a healthy life and stay at an ideal weight. Not only will exercise keep your dog fit, it will also burn a lot of their excess energy. A dog that is tired out from exercising may rest more calmly at home and have less anxiety when left alone. Exercise... Full story

You wouldn't be reading this if your eyes weren't healthy enough to see the print. Obvious, right? But most of us take our vision for granted. We put a lot of effort and energy into keeping our bodies fit and healthy, but we scarcely think at all about our eyes. That can be a problem, especially for folks who are active in the Sisters Country outdoors. We're exposed to a lot of ultraviolet light, summer and winter. That UV light can cause all kinds of vision problems. "UV... Full story

Getting hurt is an occupational hazard for athletes, especially those of us who are of the weekend warrior variety. There are two kinds of athletic injury: Acute (blown-out knee, tweaked back) and chronic overuse (bum knee, sore shoulder). Folks who spent the winter on skis are climbing back on... Full story
