LaVern (Vern) Dotson died on February 18 from complications of a series of strokes. He was 77. Vern was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. Upon graduation from the University of Washington, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and continued a career path which led to a specialty in the fields of Employee Benefits and Estate Tax Planning. Education and entertainment will be served up together at the Sisters Science Fair set for noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, February 23, at Sisters High School. On November 4, 1979, a horde of enraged Iranian protesters, led by a cadre of militant Islamist students, stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, Iran. Sisters is grateful for the efforts of more than 1,000 firefighting personnel who have battled the Pole Creek Fire. Students, families of Cloverdale firefighters, BJ's Ice Cream and many citizens organized by Sue Stafford of Sisters baked cookies, provided ice cream and delivered fresh socks to firefighters, who were most appreciative of the support. From watercolor paintings to stained glass, jewelry, photography, handcrafted wood art, leatherwork, and oils, there was a little something for everybody at Black Butte Ranch's Art at the Ranch art exhibit held over the Labor Day weekend. The fundraiser, now in it's 27th year, is sponsored by the Black Butte Ranch Art Guild, and raises upwards of $7,000 each year for the Sisters High School visual arts program and Sisters High School art students. Sisters resident Dale L. Jones, loving husband and father, died on May 26, 2012 after a long struggle with heart and lung disease. A man of great faith, Dale departed earth ready to be with his Creator. Dale was born in Glendale, California, in 1937 to Ralph and Dorothy Jones. Sophomore Paul Fullhart was the only Outlaws player that made an appearance at the state tournament held at the University of Oregon Thursday through Saturday, May 17-19. The boys tennis team finished third at the Special District 3 Tournament held at North Bend on Monday and Tuesday, May 7-8. North Bend placed first, and St. Mary's was runner-up. Paul Fullhart, at No. 1 singles, ended with a fourth-place finish to win a trip to the state finals next week. As the departure date for their July, 2012 trip to China approaches, Sisters High School Mandarin language students are redoubling their efforts to help fund the journey. "The kids have been working hard raking pine needles this spring to raise money, and I'm very proud of them," said David Perkins, a former resident of Taiwan, who is in his fourth year of teaching Mandarin in Sisters. Sisters is fixing to roll up its sleeves and do a major spring cleaning at all three Sisters schools. Celebrate Sisters Schools Day on Saturday, May 19, will be a massive volunteer effort to spruce up the schools with projects ranging from painting, landscaping and putting up new tennis nets at Sisters Elementary School (SES) to litter removal and wood chip distribution on the landscaping at Sisters Middle School (SMS) and Sisters High School (SHS). The Sisters High School boys tennis team has only been able to squeeze in two practices so far this season, but they are anxious to get league underway. Six seasoned players return to the varsity squad including senior Luke Gnos and sophomores Devon Calvin, Evan Rickards, Paul Fullhart, Trevor Standon and Tyrell Gilmore. Jim Kindorf, 74, of Black Butte Ranch and Green Valley, AZ, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, died on February 15, 2012, of cancer. Jim was born in San Francisco, California, to Lyle and Patricia (Swain) Kindorf. More than 50 people of all ages and athletic abilities came to the tennis courts in Sage Meadow this past Thursday to see a demonstration of Pickleball.
