Pickleball? What's that? Sisters is about to find out. At 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 18, in the community of Sage Meadow, located just north of Sisters off Camp Polk Road, a team of four experienced pickleball players will give a demonstration of how to play the game. Margaret Barber Burnham, longtime resident of Black Butte Ranch, died July 17, 2011 at the age of 95. She was an adventurous woman who was devoted to her family and a very wide circle of friends with whom she kept in touch through many handwritten letters. Her intellectual curiosity and her love of art were hallmarks of her life. Born in Berkeley, California, to Oscar Barber and Ava Earle Barber, Margaret was descended from pioneers who settled in California in the mid-1800s. The girls tennis team sent their No. 1 doubles team, Jen Houk and Elise Herron, to compete in the state championships, which were held at the Tennis Center in the athletic complex at the University of Oregon Thursday through Saturday, May 19-21. The duo was eliminated in the pigtail in the first draw. The pigtail is a qualifying round, where you have to win before you are entered into the main draw. The Lady Outlaws' tennis team completed six of eight matches to record the 5-1 win in their match at Bend High on Thursday, April 28. Becky Thomas (No. 1 singles) and Amity Calvin (No. 2 singles) won their matches and Megan Minke (No. 3 singles) and Chloe Stein (No. 4 singles) were both leading in their matches before they were called due to snow. The Outlaws defeated the Cowboys at Crook County 5-2 on April 19, but suffered a tough 1-7 loss at home against Mt. View two days later. In Tuesday's action, Luke Gnos and Devon Calvin recorded wins in singles play for the Outlaws. Gnos (No. 3 singles) beat Gabe Alvarez 6-4, 5-7, 10-3. The Outlaws suffered a big loss to Redmond on Thursday, April 14, but bounced back to play much better on Saturday, where they finished in a 4-4 tie with Central. Ben Fullhart (No. 1 singles) notched the only win for Sisters in Thursday's action against Redmond. The Lady Outlaws took top honors at the Madras Invitational on Saturday, April 16. Sisters finished with a score of 121 for first, and LaSalle was runner-up at 113. Jenna Jacobsen, a high-achieving senior at Sisters High School, is the 2011 Crooked River Roundup Rodeo and Race Meet Queen. Jacobsen isn't a novice at the job - she wore the queen's tiara for the La Pine Rodeo in 2009 and in 2010 for the Deschutes County Fair and Rodeo, and back in 2007 she was a Rim Rock Riders princess. Black Butte Ranch is a work of art itself - beautiful landscapes, views of the Three Sisters that look like a living painting. And art flourishes at the Ranch through its singular art organization: the Black Butte Ranch Art Guild. Junior Ben Fullhart made a good showing at his first appearance at the boys 4A tennis state championships, held May 20-22 at the University of Oregon. Fullhart won two consecutive matches in consolation before he lost in the semi-final round. When Marine Tresnie stepped off a plane to begin the first day as a foreign exchange student in Sisters, she was embarking on a journey that she had dreamed of for years. A native of Tubize, Belgium, Tresnie signed up for the foreign exchange program after passing tests to ensure that her English and other academic skills were adequate.
