On Monday, March 27, Phil Keller, the loving husband and father of two beautiful children, passed away peacefully at the age of 80 with his wife at his side. He was cared for by the intensive neurology comfort care unit at OHSU. Phil was a Wisconsin native and a graduate of the University of Wisconsin with a degree in radio, television, and film. The Lady Outlaws brought seven players to the 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 4 Tennis Tournament in Pendleton on Friday and Saturday, May 12-13, and emerged as the champs. The boys tennis squad lost their match against The Dalles on Monday, May 2. Coach David Rowell switched up the lineup for the Outlaw players in their match against the Riverhawks. Dominic Pulver and Jude Parzybok paired up as the No. 1 doubles team and faced Paul Kelly and Paul Capek, the doubles team that took third at State last year and are in the running to place well again this year. Jude Parzybok was the lone Outlaw to win both his matches this past week. On Tuesday against Stayton, Dominic Pulver and Jude Parzybok both tallied wins. Pulver defeated Spencer Dirkz 6-3, 7-5. Pulver was composed throughout his match and defeated Jackson Rylan in two straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. The Outlaws started their week with a 3-5 loss at home against Summit on Monday, April 10, and three days later dropped their first conference match of the season; a 3-5 loss to Crook County. In Sisters’ matchup against Summit on Monday, teams played in horrible conditions. It was windy and dirt was flying due to trucks moving soil near the tennis courts. Wolves in Sisters Country To the Editor: I would like to add some commentary to the Are more wolves roaming Sisters? article in the April 5 edition of The Nugget. I can say 100 percent without a doubt that there is a large pack of wolves roaming between Sisters and Redmond and they are following the migration path of the elk that roam the same area. The girls tennis squad posted two more wins on the tennis courts last week, which put them at 3-0 in league play and 5-1 overall. On Monday, April 3, Sisters earned a 6-2 win at The Dalles and three days later tallied a 7-1 victory at home against Madras. The Lady Outlaws started their week on the road with a 3-5 loss to Ridgeview. Their match that was to be held at Redmond on Thursday, March 23, was cancelled due to inclement weather conditions. In Tuesday’s match against the Ravens, the Outlaws were missing five of their varsity players due to spring break, and as a result had to default on No. 4 doubles. The girls tennis squad kicked off their season with an 8-0 shutout at Mountain View on Thursday, March 16, and a day later posted a 6-2 win at home against Crook County. In Thursday’s action junior Juhree Kizziar (No. 1 singles) was challenged by Mt. View’s senior Reeve Mikalson, who has improved her play since last year. Last year the boys tennis team only had four players on their roster, and this year they are up to nine. New Coach David Rowell has hopes for the future of boys tennis, and plans to add players to the roster and build the program into one that will be competitive in league play. Jude Parzybok (No. 1 singles) played a great first match of the season even though he lost the match 4-6, 0-6 to Devin Merchant. David Rowell was recently hired as the new head coach for the boys tennis program. Rowell, 26, played competitive soccer since he was 10 years old, and played tennis in high school. Rowell graduated from Canby High School and then attended Oregon State University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s in math in 2018. Roger Nelson of Sisters passed away January 28 after a long battle with Parkinson’s. Roger was born in Salem, graduated from Beaverton High School, University of Oregon, and Willamette Law School. He practiced law for over 52 years, doing estate planning, tax work, real estate development, and nonprofits. He did a considerable amount of his work pro bono and considered it to be his “ministry” in life. He hadn’t raised his fees in over 20 years, as he considered what he did his gift to others. Our beloved father, husband, and friend, Jack Gulick, passed away on November 16, after a courageous battle against several illnesses over the past several years. Jack passed peacefully at St. Charles Hospital in Bend, surrounded by his many loved ones. Jack was born in Portland on May 13, 1945, to parents Willora (Nelson) and Joseph Kassebaum.
