The Sisters Outlaws kicked off their golf season by hosting a two-person scramble event at Tokatee on March 14. Many of the courses were still closed in Central Oregon because of the cold snowy weather. Tokatee was not only open but presented us with a 60-degree day for the tournament. The Lady Outlaws tennis squad took down Bend High 5-3 in their opening match of the season on Tuesday, March 12, and two days later beat Mt. View 7-1. In Tuesday’s match the Outlaws won all of their singles matches in straights sets. Juhree Kizziar (No. 1 singles) blanked Kyla Guerrero 6-0, 6-0. The boys’ tennis squad lost both their opening matches this past week, a 0-8 loss at home against Crook County (CC) on Monday, March 11, and two days later a 1-8 loss at Mt. View. On Monday, the Outlaws played in cool weather on damp courts at home against CC. For many of the players it was the first time they had played against an opponent in a real match. The Outlaws boys wrestling team traveled to Burns for the 3A Special District 4 Championships Saturday, February 10, and three punched their tickets to the OSAA Tournament based on their performances. Scott Henderson, Tyson Kemp, and Carter Van Meter will represent the Outlaws at the state tournament, which is set for February 22-24 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland. The Sisters High School ski team is nearing the end of their season. Each racer has pushed extremely hard this season to do their best and approach each race with a positive mindset. The Outlaws swim team wrapped up the 2024 season with strong performances at the OSAA State Championships held at Tualatin Valley Swim Center February 16 and 17. Preliminaries took place Friday with the top six finishers qualifying for the finals. Ella Bartlett picked up a pair of medals over the weekend. The Lady Outlaws basketball squad (No. 3 in league play) matched up against the Lady Bulldogs (No. 2) at Creswell on Friday, February 16, in a league playoff game. Sisters fell in a final score of 41-52, and with the loss played Elmira (No.4) the following day. This time they walked off the court with a 46-37 victory. For 63-year-old Paul Reina of Bend, last weekend's Lucky Leprechaun run marked his first-ever formal race. "I started running in November with my daughter, who is a cancer survivor, and figured that by signing up for events like this, I would stay motivated to keep running," Reina said. What a difference a few weeks make. Ski Hoodoo waited until January to open for lack of snow. Now they are sitting atop 80 inches plus, with more coming in. At the nearby Sno Parks, and Three Creek Sno Park closer to town, the snowmobiles are revved up and gliding over deep snow terrain. Lauren Fleshman made her mark athletically as an elite runner, but her memoir may be her legacy. Fleshman's deep concern for the well-being of athletes, especially girls and women, is woven throughout her book, "Good for a Girl: A Woman Running in a Man's World." The Outlaws pushed their limits and took risks at the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing 2024 State Championships at Mt. Hood Meadows, Wednesday through Friday, March 6-8. They didn't make top finishes, but they ended their season on a spirited note. Wednesday was a training day. The snow was dry and cold with sunny skies and calm winds, which made for a fun day and great team bonding. What does the Sisters Ranger District do when the ground is buried under five to 10 feet of snow, or the roads are closed? They do much of the same work they do any other time of the year. The girls tennis squad returns several players and hopes to repeat as the Special District 4 champions again this year. Leading the way will be senior Juhree Kizziar, who was undefeated in conference play last year, and was the No. 1 singles champion at district. Kizziar has been playing all winter at the Athletic Club of Bend, and, according to Coach Bruce Fenn, her game is even better in all areas — especially her serve and volleys. The boys tennis team currently has nine players on their roster, but would love to add more so they can fill the slate. Players are fairly young and new to the sport, so it will be a building year for the Outlaws. Junior Jude Parzybok and sophomore Dominic Pulver are top returning players. Pulver placed sixth at District last year and barely missed going to state. Both Pulver and Parzybok have very strong first serves, but their biggest weapons are their forehands at the baseline. The long road to the OSAA State Wrestling Championships concluded with two Outlaws placing in the top six, and one narrowly missing a medal. Junior Carter Van Meter, who brought a 38-16 record to the tournament picked up three more wins for the season on his way to fifth place in the 3A 126-pound class. Lauren Fleshman, well known for her highly decorated running career, will visit Sisters Athletic Club on Wednesday, March 6, to discuss her recent book “Good for a Girl: A Woman Running in a Man’s World,” published last year. The memoir became a New York Times best seller, and won the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award. The Washington Post described the book as “A close-up look at the uncertain and often unhealthy climb toward stardom for women in organized sports.” As a runner, Fleshman, who resides in Bend, won... Vince Grace, a long-time resident of Sisters, has taken over the reins as the new head coach for the boys' tennis team. Grace recently retired from the U.S. Forest Service, but still actively contributes in the summer months. Last year he volunteered to help Bruce Fenn with the girls' tennis program. Senior Justin DeSmet signed an official letter of intent on Thursday, February 22, to play football for George Fox University (GFU) Bruins this coming fall. DeSmet was a key player for the Outlaws and will be an asset to the Bruins football squad. DeSmet grew up in Dayton and lived there until he moved to Sisters as a junior. For the first time in school history, the Lady Outlaws basketball squad came out on top in the first round of the state playoffs. They travelled all the way to the coast on Wednesday, February 21, and took on No. 13-ranked Warrenton Warriors. The Outlaws battled hard in their first league playoff game at home against Siuslaw on Friday, February 16, and posted a 62-55 victory. The following day they faced Creswell in a must-win game held at Thurston High School. Sisters came up short in a final score of 40-54, which brought their season to an abrupt finish. A pair of Outlaws finished the wrestling season at the Special District 1 4A/3A/2A/1A girls’ wrestling tournament held at Cottage Grove High School February 16-17. The tournament served as the qualifying meet for the upcoming OSAA Championships in Portland February 23-25. Though girls’ wrestling continues to grow at a fast rate in Oregon, many schools have small teams which is why the Special District 1 tournament included wrestlers from 50 different schools from the 4A/3A/2A/1A classification. Shae Wyland, Ila Reid, Audrey Corcoran, and Maggie Lutz were all selected to the Mountain Valley All Conference Team. Junior post Wyland was a first-team pick and was also named to the All Defensive Team. Wyland led the Outlaws with 12 rebounds per game, four-plus blocked shots, and scored an average of six points per game. The Outlaws’ five seniors, Austin Dean, Brody Fischer, Ila Reid, Maggie Lutz, and Jenna Lake were honored between the varsity girls and boys games in Tuesday’s contest at home against Creswell.
