The Sisters Outlaws swim team qualified three swimmers to the OSAA State Championships at the 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 4 meet February 9-10 at the Albany Aquatics Center. The Lady Outlaws basketball squad suffered a heart-wrenching 40-42 loss to the visiting Creswell Bulldogs in the final minute of the game on Tuesday, February 6. A win would have given them a second-place tie with Creswell, but with the loss they finished third, regardless of the outcome of their final league game on the road against Harrisburg on Friday. Sisters High School Alpine ski team competed in the third slalom race of the Emerald Ski League's season. The race was held on a run called Swoosh at Willamette Pass and conditions were near perfect with sunny skies, no wind, and a hard, fast, racing surface. The Outlaws battled a very good Creswell team at home on Friday, February 9, but in the end came up short 58-62. On Friday the Outlaws fell 32-39 on the road at Harrisburg in their final league game of the season. Standings remain undetermined as several teams still had games this week. The Outlaws basketball squad posted three wins last week, including a 57-49 win at Elmira on Tuesday, January 30, and three days later a 62-57 win at home over Siuslaw. In a road game on Saturday against Creswell the Outlaws walked off the court with a 48-35 victory for their third straight win of the week. The Lady Outlaws squeaked out a 48-46 win on the road at Elmira on Tuesday, January 30, and at home three days later defeated Siuslaw 53-25. On Saturday the Lady Outlaws fell 35-40 in a hard-fought battle at Creswell, in a game that was rescheduled from earlier in the season due to the stormy weather. The Outlaws ski team competed in a slalom race at Hoodoo on February 3, and for the first time this season raced under sunny conditions with a smooth racing surface. Sisters girls finished first, second, and third and won the race by a large margin. The Outlaws wrestling squad took part in two competitions last week including its final big tournament in La Pine, prior to the district championships set for this coming week in Burns. Sisters’ boys team finished in eighth place overall with 92 points among 13 scoring teams. La Pine dominated its home tourney and captured the team title with 240.5 points to easily outdistance second place Lowell. Despite a few dustings, the large snow piles are shrinking, revealing previously buried and iced-over lawns, sidewalks and driveways. The Alpine Ski Teams competed in two races last week, the first a Giant Slalom on Wednesday, January 24, at Hoodoo Ski Area, and three days later a slalom race at Willamette Pass. Conditions were very wet and stormy on Wednesday at Hoodoo, and the race officials cancelled the second run, which made it a one-run race. The girls team took first place for the day, but the boys struggled with the soft, rutted course conditions, and finished third. A total of six boys and four girls took part in the Tod Surmon Mid-Valley Classic hosted by West Albany High School at the Linn County Fair and Expo site over last weekend. Sisters placed a very respectable sixth among the 18 schools with 72 points. Mountainside overwhelmed the competition with 200 points. Teams came from the range of 6A-2A classifications Senior Scott Henderson, 190 pounds, finished the highest for the Outlaws making it to the championship match. The Outlaws basketball squad fell 50-62 on the road to the Siuslaw Vikings on Monday, January 22, in a game that had been rescheduled due to inclement weather the previous week. Three days later they lost 49-69 on the road at Pleasant Hill, and on Saturday they suffered a tough 59-63 loss at home against La Pine. For many years, the Sisters Outlaws baseball team headed south to Arizona for the Coach Bob Invitational in the Scottsdale/Phoenix area. The trip had many benefits for the team - including the basic opportunity to get on the field in decent weather. Coach Matt Hilgers is reviving that tradition. Going head-to-head with the Santiam Wolverines on January 17 gave the Outlaws' wrestling team a chance to flex their muscles, and show their moves on their home turf. The Outlaws fell 25-35 to the Harrisburg Eagles at home on Saturday, January 20, in a low-scoring, low-tempo contest. Harrisburg is the top team in the Mountain Valley Conference. Sisters couldn’t find any rhythm against the tough Eagles’ defense at the start of the contest and quickly fell behind 1-8. Sisters Lady Outlaws got off to a very slow start in their game against Harrisburg at home on Saturday, January 20, but clawed back in the second half, took the lead in the final quarter, and recorded the 47-44 win. The Sisters Outlaws Alpine Ski Team made a strong showing at the first Emerald League High School Alpine Ski Race of the 2024 season. Both the boys and girls teams won first place in the team score. Sisters competed in a Giant Slalom race that was held at Willamette Pass on Saturday, January 20. Conditions for the race held true to the El Niño theme of this winter, with gusty winds, a bit of rain, and heavy wet snow. Sisters girls basketball team squeaked past Elirma on Monday, January 8, in an exciting match-up that ended in a dramatic 43-40 finish. The Outlaws got off to a slow start, but midway through the first quarter Jenna Lake banked in a three-pointer that gave the Outlaws a 8-6 lead. That ended Sisters scoring for the quarter. The Oregon Classic, held January 12-13, attracted more than 50 teams from all Oregon classifications as one of the largest gatherings of wrestlers annually in the state. The tournament is unique in that teams pair up with other squads for a series of head to head duals, and final team results are based on which team ultimately comes out on top in the classification. The Outlaws boys basketball squad defeated the visiting Elmira Falcons 55-53 on Monday, January 8, with a layup from Landon Scott at the buzzer. In the first quarter, the score went back-and-forth in the first quarter with several lead changes. With 1:30 left Austin Dean made a driving layup to tie it up 13-13. On the next possession, Dean stole the ball, and dished it off to Oliver Bernhardt who scored the layup. Bernhardt was fouled on the shot, made the free throw, and took the Outlaws to a 16-13 lead. Bandits Baseball is comprised of 10U and 12U travel baseball teams based here in Sisters, and this past weekend they picked up Christmas trees all around the Sisters area. Players made over 50 stops on Saturday, January 6, and made just over $800 that will be put towards tournament fees, gear, and facility use fees. The Outlaws hosted the annual Sisters Shootout Tournament on Thursday through Saturday, December 28-30. Sisters got off to a great start with a 50-36 win over the Mazama Vikings on Thursday, but a day later suffered a tough 33-51 loss to Banks. They faced the Hidden Valley Mustangs in their final game on Saturday and lost 47-50 in a tight contest. Marley Holden has signed an official letter of intent to play soccer for the Corban University Warriors. Holden has been a four-year starter for the Sisters Lady Outlaws, a leader, and a very integral part of the squad, and has dreamed of playing at the collegiate level since she was in seventh grade.
