The Lady Outlaws won one of their three games at the Sisters Shootout held Thursday through Saturday, December 28-30. The tourney was round-robin style, and each team played three games. In addition to Sisters, teams from around the state were at the event, including Madras, Junction City, Henley, Sweet Home, Hidden Valley, Banks, and La Grande. The Outlaws boys basketball squad opened league play with a 50-60 loss at home to Pleasant Hill (PH) on Wednesday, January 3, but wrapped up their week three days later with a 65-55 road win at La Pine. Sisters opened Mountain Valley Conference (MVC) at home against the OSAA No. 2-ranked Pleasant Hill Billies, who are favored to win the MVC league championship this season. As the wrestling team enters the core of its season, the squad is filling out the weight classifications, and individuals are gaining valuable experience. They put that experience on display at the King of the Hill Invitational hosted by Pleasant Hill High School January 5-6. The Lady Outlaws basketball team trailed the entire contest against the Pleasant Hill (PH) Billies in the league opener at home on Wednesday, January 3, and lost in a final score of 42-35. Three days later, they crushed the La Pine Hawks 58-21 on the road. The Outlaws boys hopsters came out on top 48-42 at home against the visiting Sweet Home Huskies on Tuesday, December 19, and a day later fell 45-58 on the road at Estacada. On Tuesday against the Huskies the score went back and forth during the first quarter, and was knotted up four times. Diego Silva, Brody Fischer, Landon Scott, and Kale Gardner all contributed points to make it a 10-8 Outlaw lead with 1:40 left in the quarter. The Lady Outlaws won both their games this past week to make it three wins in a row. Sisters defeated the visiting Sweet Home Huskies 35-26 on Tuesday, December 19, and a day later posted a 35-34 win on the road at Estacada. In Tuesday’s action the Outlaws got off to slow start. The Outlaws played hard against the visiting Cottage Grove (CG) Lions on Tuesday, December 12, but lost by three, 45-48, in an exciting fourth-quarter battle. Three days later at South Umpqua the Outlaws prevailed and posted a 61-44 victory. On Tuesday the Lions came out with a pressure style defense that knocked the Outlaws back a bit at the start of the game. Sisters High School played host to the annual GFP Outlaw Invite on Saturday, December 16 with mixed results. The girls tied for eighth among 13 teams, while the boys took ninth among 14 teams. For the girls, the Outlaws picked up two third places, a fourth, and a fifth among the four who competed. The Sisters Outlaws Alpine Ski Team is getting ready for the upcoming season. They will field 26 athletes, 19 skiers who return from last year, and seven who are new to the program this year. The girls squad returns the most skiers and the most upperclassmen the Outlaws have had in many years. The girls basketball squad fell 37-50 at home to Cottage Grove on Tuesday, December 12, but three days later, they bounced back with a 65-47 victory on the road at South Umpqua. In Tuesday’s action against the Lady Lions the Outlaws were shorthanded, with one starter out, with an injury and another for academic reasons. The girls soccer squad wrapped up a perfect league season, made it to the state semifinals and to top it off had three players make All-state teams. Marley Holden was a first-team pick and Izzy Schiller and Katie Ryan were both second-team selections. Holden, for the second consecutive year, led the Outlaws in both goals and assists, 21 and 11 respectively. She was a stellar midfielder who was the “engine” of the team. The Outlaws started their week with a 61-32 loss at The Dalles on Tuesday, December 5, but four days later they bounced back with a 69-48 victory at home against Yamhill-Carlton. The Outlaws wrestling team traveled to Culver for a two-day tournament December 8-9 and showed continued improvement, according to Head Coach David Kemp. Five girls competed in the tournament for Sisters, including top finisher Brooklynn Cooper, who picked up a third place medal in the 122-128 pound division. The girls basketball squad had a busy week, which started with a 22-51 loss at home against Jefferson on Monday, December 4. Three days later they posted a big 65-30 win at Culver and wrapped up their week with a 44-58 loss at home on Saturday against Yamhill-Carlton. Four winter range closures are now in effect across the Deschutes National Forest to provide critical habitat for deer and elk. Closure areas include Cabin/Silver Lake, Metolius Winter Range, Opine Travel Management Area, and Tumalo Winter Range. Motorized vehicles (including snowmobiles and electric bicycles) are prohibited in the closure areas to protect deer and elk during the winter. It was a close battle, but in the end Sisters came up short in a final score of 49-44. Sisters started off a bit slow, but then Ila Reid had a couple of nice drives to the basket for points. Sisters High School senior Ella Bartlett will continue her running career next year for the Nighthawks at Northwest Nazarene University (NNU) in Nampa, Idaho. Her choice became official on November 28 in a signing ceremony at Sisters High School, surrounded by her parents, coaches, and teammates. The Lady Outlaws currently have 19 girls on their roster —three seniors, six juniors, one sophomore, and nine freshmen — which is enough to put both a JV and a varsity squad on the court. Marley Holden was a unanimous vote for Player of the Year for the Special District 3 in girls soccer; the first time a Sisters player has received that honor since 2010.
