The Outlaws soccer squad took down Western Christian (WC) at home on Saturday, September 14. Sisters players came out loose and focused from the opening whistle. They played well as a cohesive unit, and the early control of the midfield and the involvement from the defense led to the Outlaws first goal. The Lady Outlaws soccer squad fell 3-1 at Creswell on Monday, September 9, but at home two days later they edged out Pleasant Hill 1-0. On Monday, Creswell scored off a corner kick in the first half of Monday’s match-up and the Outlaws entered the half down 0-1. Just two minutes into the second half Tallis Grummer won the ball in the midfield and played the ball to Zoee Bafford. The Lady Outlaws hosted 25 teams in their annual Sisters Tournament. Twenty-four teams were from Oregon and Melba High School joined the fray from Idaho. Valley Catholic defeated Crook County in the championship match, and Cascade and Melba tied for third place. Approaching the first meet of the season as a hard practice gave the Outlaws cross-country teams an attitude of testing fitness while getting some race experience simultaneously. The results were positive for veterans and newcomers alike. Makena Zorza was hired three weeks ago as the girls assistant soccer coach, but after long-time coach Brian Holden resigned, she took over the head coaching position. Zorza graduated from Hood River Valley High School (HRVHS) in 2018 and played soccer all four years, three years on their varsity squad as a forward and outside midfielder. The Outlaws soccer squad lost 0-5 at home against Madras on Thursday, September 5. The match was scheduled to be played in Madras, but due to smoky conditions was moved to Sisters. The White Buffs are a disciplined and well-coached team and the Outlaws knew they were in for a battle. The Outlaws fell 21-25, 15-15, 25-22, and 26-28 in a tough match at Caldera on Tuesday, September 3. A day later they hosted 3A Burns and 2A Trinity Lutheran. Sisters fell in three straight sets 20-25, 11-25, and 17-25. They managed to squeak out a five game win against Trinity with scores of 25-20,17-25, 25-29, 20-25, and 15-13. The Outlaws football team returns eight starters on both sides of the ball, including seniors Hudson Beckwith, Kolbi Cotner, and Garrett Sager, and juniors Kalvin Parker, Jozua Miller, and Ethan Eby. The boys soccer squad defeated the Delphian Dragons 3-1 on the road on Friday, August 30. The Dragons were the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last year. The boys’ soccer team has proven they are a squad to be reckoned with. The Outlaws have established themselves as one of the strongest teams in the league, winning league titles the past two years. Josh Kreunen was recently hired as the new head volleyball coach, and has only had time with the Lady Outlaws during daily doubles. After just one short week he’s had to divide over 36 girls into three teams, and get ready for preseason play. Josh Kreunen was recently hired as the new head girls volleyball coach. He brings with him a wealth of personal and coaching experience. Kreunen started playing club volleyball when he was a sophomore in high school and played through high school, college, and beyond. Sisters K-9 Paws 4-H Club participated in the Deschutes County Dog Fair Show on July 30. Members showed in Obedience, Rally, Showmanship, and Agility. Fair participation increased to 22 members, which increased competition. Sisters Bike Park 242 is located on the edge of the Sisters High School parking lot. It provides an outlet for kids, of all ages, to get a little dusty and 'send it' while riding their bikes. In October 2015, the bike park received donations to start building a small pump track. In April of 2016, the big pump track was created. Managers of the Deschutes National Forest are asking for public comment on a draft change in administrative rules that would allow approximately 160 miles of trails to be freed for use by Class 1 e-bikes. Currently, no e-bikes of any class are allowed in the Forest except on roads shared with other motorized vehicles. It was a perfect day for a trail run in Central Oregon as runners gathered for the ninth annual Kiwanis Run to The Top at Hoodoo Ski Resort. The Forest Service is proposing to approve special use permits for two local businesses, Stagecoach Adventures and Cog Wild, to provide shuttle services to and from several trailheads within the Sisters Ranger District. The first iteration of the "Red, White, and Blue" 5K run and walk attracted over 200 participants on July 4th.
