Thick- skinned citizens needed in Camp Sherman

The Camp Sherman Local Advisory Committee to the Jefferson County Planning Commission has been one member short since March.

More recently, the planning commission member representing Camp Sherman, Suttle Lake and Blue Lake resigned. He has not been replaced.

Why?

"We have advertised (in The Nugget), we have solicited, we have begged for replacements," said County Judge Dan Ahern, "but we cannot get them."

Land- use and zoning issues have resulted in controversy in the Camp Sherman area in recent years. "People are unwilling to serve because they don't feel these are comfortable positions. The current environment and hard feelings" within the community are to blame, Ahern added.

The county commissioners hope to hear from interested volunteers with tough hides who are willing to take on their community's interests in the two land- use bodies.

Those hardy souls should write Ahern at 75 S.E. "C" Street in Madras (Zip 97741), or call the office of the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners at (541) 475- 2449.

"After all," said Ahern, "the planning commission has seven members and only a small part of the commission's business has to do with Camp Sherman. A commissioner from there would get plenty of practice on other county issues . .. and if he or she did not want to vote on an issue, there would still be six others who could."
