A brilliantly sunny afternoon greeted a gathering of Sisters Habitat for Humanity supporters celebrating the groundbreaking for the chapter's 27th home on Sunday afternoon, February 8.

Nick and Jackie Shepardson dug into the muddy ground with the symbolic golden shovel as onlookers cheered.

The groundbreaking ceremony kicked off work on the Shepardson's future home, located at 135 N. Cowboy Street near Sisters Elementary School.

Family partner Judy Trego has known the Shepardsons for a decade and she was full of praise for the family.

Noting that the Shepardsons and their five children have faced considerable adversity with grace and courage, she said, "The strength that I see in them really ministers to me."

Trego noted that both Nick and Jackie are the kind of people who labor behind the scenes with no expectation of credit or acclaim, helping to make Sisters a better, more vibrant community.

Habitat depends on volunteers to build homes and help families. The chapter will host a new volunteer orientation on Thursday, February 12, at 10 a.m. or 5 p.m.

The orientation is for all those interested in assisting Habitat with building, committee work or the Thrift Store.

RSVP is requested at 549-1193.
