Two die in icy crash at Lost Lake

A Redmond mother and daughter were killed outright at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 13, in a two- car collision on U.S. 20 near Lost Lake. A 2- year- old girl in the same car was secured in an approved child restraint seat and was not injured.

This was the second fatal accident in a little over two weeks on the same short stretch of road between Hoodoo Ski Area and Lost Lake. Three people died after an accident on December 27, including Willard and Mae Cyrus, farming pioneers of the Sisters area.

The dead were Kathryn Nelson, 47, and Christiana Celeste Nelson,31, who reportedly had only recently moved to Redmond from Washington state. Christiana Nelson's daughter, Audra Reann Nelson, survived. Both of the women were wearing seat belts.

According to the Oregon State Police, Robert Worlock, 37, of Newberg, was driving an eastbound passenger van which went out of control on ice at Mile Post 77.3 and crashed broadside into the Nelson's westbound compact car.

Marcia Worlock, 47, occupying the van's right front passenger seat, sustained fractures of the pelvis, right shoulder and right hand. She was listed in fair condition Monday at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.

Daniel Worlock, 8, suffered severe head injuries. A St. Charles spokesman said his condition was upgraded from critical to serious over the weekend, but he remained in the hospital's critical care unit Monday. Daniel had been seated in the middle of the van's front seat. Both he and Marcia Worlock were transported by Air Life Oregon.

The other occupants of the van, Matthew Worlock, 12, and Lake Oswego resident Luca Posada, 11, had only minor injuries but were taken by Sisters Ambulance to St. Charles, along with Audra Nelson, for observation and evaluation.

One emergency responder said the surface of U.S. 20 was bare at the time, except at Lost Lake and in shaded stretches to the west of Santiam Pass which were coated with ice.
