News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
According to Sisters Middle/High School Principal Dennis Dempsey, Sisters police informed him of the threat at about 11:50 a.m. Dempsey in turn informed the elementary school.
The 911 caller reportedly stated there were two pipe bombs in a school building set to go off at noon. Since no specific school was mentioned, all the schools in the county were evacuated, Dempsey said.
Dempsey said that he was advised simply to conduct a fire drill to get students out of the buildings. He said he was not directed to search the buildings. There was no explosion and students returned to class after about 10 minutes.
Dempsey told The Nugget the incident highlights the need for a review of county-wide procedures to handle actual and potential emergencies.
"If this shows anything," he said, "this is something Deschutes County will have to address."
