World-class cowboys head to Sisters Rodeo

Sisters is ready to saddle up and set the spurs into a busy summer season as the 56th Annual Sisters Rodeo rockets out of the chutes June 7, 8 and 9.

The Wild West excitement starts Friday night, June 7, with a family night rodeo performance at 7 p.m.

The serious action starts Saturday at 9:30 a.m., when Rodeo Queen Jenny Matney leads the Rodeo Parade through the streets of Sisters. Rodeo grand marshals this year are fire chiefs Don Mouser and Chuck Cable, honored for their service to the community and for their efforts in putting out a blaze at the rodeo association clubhouse March 24.

An afternoon and evening rodeo performance follows and families can kick up their bootheels at the Saturday night Cowboy Dance at the Sisters Elementary School gym.

Buckaroos and buckarettes may need to fortify themselves with a hearty breakfast Sunday morning, and the Sisters Kiwanis can provide it with the traditional Buckaroo Breakfast at the rodeo grounds starting at 7 a.m.

A cowboy prayer service will be held at 9 a.m., and the rodeo will close with an afternoon performance at 1 p.m.

This year, the challenges of rodeo have not been restricted to the action in the arena. The Sisters Rodeo Association took on construction of a new set of box seats, assembled by a force of rodeo volunteers.

"The box seat section took a lot of manpower, a lot of hours," said rodeo association secretary Judy Bull. "It turned out better than anyone ever hoped it could be."

Bull said the new seats and the expanded service offered in the section will enhance the enjoyment of the event for the box seat patrons.

The rodeo clubhouse has been completely rebuilt by the original builder G.J. Miller.

"The challenges have been met and conquered," Bull said.

The Sisters Rodeo traditionally draws top cowboys. Bull reported that 1995 World Champion Calf Roper Joe Beaver will return to the rodeo, an appearance that has become a Beaver family tradition.

"His family comes a week early to enjoy everything Sisters has to offer," Bull said.
