Parking off Cascade for quilt show

The Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show is prepared to greet the crowds that are expected to throng 10,000-strong to the event Saturday, July 13.

New plans are in place to cope with the crowds of quilt-viewing pedestrians and attendant traffic problems.

The Oregon Department of Transportation has given the go-ahead to ban parking along Cascade Street from Fir Street to Ash Street from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on "quilt show" day. Traffic cones will be set to direct pedestrian flow and to warn people against backing out onto the highway to take pictures.

The Sisters Police Department expressed concerns about pedestrians on the highway after last summer's show.

A contingent of Oregon State Police Explorers will be on hand to help with traffic and two additional reserve officers from Sisters Police Department will be on duty. The $600 bill for the extra security and traffic control personnel was paid by the East of the Cascade Quilters, hosts of the show.

According to quilt show organizer Jean Wells Keenan, visitors are being encouraged to park at the elementary school and at Sisters Middle/High School. She said she is working on setting up a shuttle that will run continuously from the middle/high school to the corner of Pine Street, the former Shell station.

"That should really help congestion," Keenan said.

Quilters will start arriving in the week before the show. Keenan said about 650 people have signed up for classes July 10, 11 and 12.
