Sisters woman dies in Highway 20 crash

A 66-year-old Sisters woman died Tuesday, July 16, after the minivan she was driving crossed over the center line as she drove westbound on Highway 20, colliding head-on with a truck.

Jane M. Grider, a resident of Sisters for six years, died on the scene after emergency crews worked for nearly an hour to extricate her from the vehicle wreckage and treat massive internal injuries.

The accident occurred at about 5:25 p.m. at Milepost 1 just east of Sisters. Police who investigated the crash do not know why Grider drifted across the center line into oncoming traffic. Her vehicle sideswiped a trailer being towed by another vehicle, then continued on in the eastbound lane and struck the left front of a septic truck driven by William Raymond Chester of Bend. Grider's van then spun across the highway and came to a stop on the north shoulder facing west.

Chester and the driver of the trailer were not seriously hurt in the crash.

According to police, emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene almost immediately.

Grider, who worked at Hats Plus in Sisters, had many friends in the community.

"She was well-loved and well-respected by a lot of people here in Sisters," said Grider's friend Sharon Raker. "She was a real friend to a lot of people."

Raker said that another friend, Debbie Westendorf, reflected that "Sisters has lost a colorful part of itself."

A "life celebration" for Grider will be held by friends July 28 at 4 p.m. at the Village Green.

Grider's son was reportedly killed in a automobile accident out of state earlier this year.
