News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The skateboard facility is sponsored by the Sisters Organization for Activities and Recreation which had requested permission from the city to install a roof to protect the half-pipe from winter weather. The facility is presently located on a street in the industrial park.
City Councilor Jean Cooper said she had understood the use of the street for the skateboard equipment was to have been temporary and that the facility was portable. A roof would tend to make the facility more permanent.
Asked for his thoughts, City Public Works Director Gary Frazee said a roof over the half-pipe would have to be anchored and that would mean drilling into the street. He said if it becomes a permanent facility it would have to be "looked at a whole different way."
He said at the present "temporary" site there are no facilities for drinking water, restrooms, parking or garbage collection.
The city could relocate the facility to the Sisters City Park on the east end of town. Another site that may be considered is city "park land" adjacent to the current street site in the industrial park.
SOAR, represented by Tom Coffield, was directed to meet with Frazee and City Planning Director Neil Thompson to study various options for the facility.
