Sisters to host antique show

Antique dealers' booths will spring up around the old Sisters School campus at the corner of Highway 20 and Locust Street on Friday, August 2, as Country Heart Promotions' summer antique festival prepares for a big weekend.

The Sisters Antique Festival will bring 110 antique dealers to Sisters August 3-4 and the show is expected to bring thousands of antique aficionados to town to hunt through offerings of furniture, glassware, jewelry, textiles, books and more.

Event organizer Nancy Mattison said patrons will find "a lot of furniture; oak, pine mahogany." She said "primitives" will be a major feature of the furniture offerings.

"The paint will be worn off, but that's a really cool look," she said.

Mattison said many will be "just looking" on Saturday.

"People like to walk through and look once," Mattison said. People "keep things in mind" Mattison said, then go home and measure to see if furniture will fit or check to see if an interesting item will really go with their decor. Then they come back to the show ready to buy.

"Sunday's usually the big buying day," Mattison reported.

Waiting can lead to disappointment, though. Sometimes a shopper comes back to find their treasure is gone.

"You'll find if you don't grab it, it's gone," Mattison said.

Mattison noted that the show often attracts as many men as women, offering a selection of antique tools, sporting goods, snowshoes and the like that greatly interest men.

The show is likely to bring hordes of antique enthusiasts to Sisters. The event, formerly known as Antiques at the Drake, has drawn thousands of antique aficionados to Central Oregon in past years. Organizers moved the show to Sisters this year after losing the Drake Park venue in Bend due to restrictions on the number of events per month in the park.

Mattison said the dealers are pleased with the move.

"Everyone is thrilled it's going to be in Sisters," she said.
