News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
To the Editor:
At the urging of a young friend I am writing in response to the letter two weeks ago that stated the Metolius River is too cold and too swift to be a family swimming river.
My mother swam in the river -- a fast in and out -- until she was 80 years old. I am in my late 70s and I, my children, grandchildren and numerous friends and neighbors all swim in the river. A brief duck in and a fast out wakes one up these lethargic, 100 degrees, smoky days.
The elite catch and release, barbless hooks, wild fish-only fly fishermen have spoiled the fishing for the children. They used to have the occasional thrill of catching a hatchery fish. Let the fly fishermen put their ugly rocks from the Santiam Pass and their woody material in the sections of the river that do not flow pass the camp grounds. I hope they are not allowed to spoil the swimming and rafting for the children (and adults) like they have already spoiled the fishing.
Sincerely,
Mary Kate Spencer, Camp Sherman
To the Editor:
Would anyone be willing to shed light on a very disturbing incident concerning two dogs that were hit-and-run on Ivy Lane August 8 between 8-9 a.m.?
Both dogs were seriously injured. It should be of major concern for the neighborhood considering there are many children.

To the Editor:
It is with great joy and gratitude that I am writing to thank the Sisters community.
Our first Country Fair was a wonderful success. The llamas were petted, the ponies were ridden and the white elephants were purchased. The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration has a small congregation; we all worked hard to make the fair happen.
It was a great thrill for us to see so many families enjoying fresh picked corn, country fair dogs, smoked salmon on a stick, and ice cream sundaes while they listened to music by our own Peggy Tehan and the Sisters Choir, Ed Fitzjerral and Dave Sheldon, and the Sisters Sound Check Band.
Space doesn't allow a list of all those who helped but, as well as all the musicians who donated their time, I especially want to thank Ray's Food Place, Lutton's Hardware, Black Butte Ranch, Sykes Seafood, Victoria Herring, Linda Patterson, Tewalt's Nursery, Stephen Perrault Construction, Eberhard's Dairy, Pepsi Cola Bottling, the Fire Department, U.S. Forest Service, and the Chamber of Commerce.
You have helped us to help others.
Penny Buttke
Country Fair Chairperson
