News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Letters to the Editor

To the Editor:

Congratulations to city residents for taking back control of your city. You have shown through your vote of new council members and the annexing measure, you want more say in what goes on in your town. It is certainly no "small local minority" that votes 2 to 1 to require voter approval of annexations.

In keeping with my campaign pledge to represent the folks that live here, I would like to hear your opinions. As a council member, your opinions matter a great deal to me. Could you please take a moment to give me your thoughts on current and upcoming city issues. As your representative, I would like to get a consensus of your opinions to use at council meetings.

Please jot down your opinions on these issues and whatever else concerns you: city budget, sewer system, city comprehensive plan, new city hall, PMR development, water and garbage rates, indoor swimming pool in the city, keeping some water in Squaw Creek.

I would like to quote short worded comments at future council meetings. If you would like to be anonymous that is fine too. Please send your comments to: T. Clasen, P.O. Box 1633, Sisters, OR 97759. Again, congratulations on taking back control of your city. Sisters residents should be very proud of their slow, controlled growth stand. Few cities in Oregon have done so. Please keep up your participation by jotting down you opinions. Thank you.

Tim Clasen

To the Editor:

The Committee to Save Sisters wishes to announce plans to circulate a petition to gather signatures to place a measure on the March, 1997, ballot which would require city voter approval before the extension of any city services beyond the city limits, with the exception of emergency services.

The measure, in effect, is an integral part of the recently approved annexation measure, but was not included in that measure because of legal advice we were given that it would not be proper to include two subject matters within the same measure. The committee wishes to express its appreciation to all city voters for their favorable approval of the annexation measure.

Sincerely,

John Allen

To the Editor:

Once again the Sisters Library Halloween Parade was a huge success. A very special thank you goes to all the Sisters merchants, the Sisters Rotary Club volunteers, Tom Coffield of SOAR and the City of Sisters Police Department.

This year we had over 350 children and 50 merchants participate in this annual event. It's wonderful to see the parents, grandparents, children, and store owners all enjoy a colorful and festive parade.

During the 10 years the library has sponsored this parade it has grown every year and has become too large for our small staff. It is with great pleasure to announce that the Sisters Rotary Club and SOAR have agreed to sponsor this program next year. Thank you all for making another Halloween Parade a success.

Yours truly,

Peg Bermel, Sisters Librarian

To the Editor;

As a member of the Sisters High School dance team, I would like to respond to the letter to the editor in last Wednesday's paper.

I think that everyday situations prepare me for life. By being on the dance team it teaches me coordination, teamwork, working towards a common goal, self esteem, patience, inner drive (i.e., competitions and performances) which all build character.

Besides, all 14 girls are involved in other activities such as drama, youth group, church activities, track, choir, golf, key club, Habitat for Humanity, national honor society, leadership and have outside jobs which are also character-building activities. Not all sports and activities are for everyone!

I am very proud and privileged to be a member of the dance team. I appreciate my coaches Julie Voss and Sandy Tartaglia and their dedication, time volunteering, their guidance and their love for "their girls." We are all thankful for the community, staff and educators support.

Sincerely,

Dena Leib

Correction: In last weeks Nugget, a letter to the editor was submitted by Holli & Jerid Helm, not Jim Helm. We regret the error.
