News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
In Sisters the mayor does not have a vote on the council except in case of a tie.
The new council's first major action was the approval of a county plan to repave North Pine Street, adding curbs and sidewalks on the east side of the street.
The project will pave the street from Cascade Avenue north to a point just past Barclay Way. Sidewalks will be built next to Sno-Cap Drive-in and curbing will run along the east edge of the road. There will be no curbing on the west edge of the street.
The project will provide three parallel parking spaces next to Sno-Cap and three directly across Cascade. The city's approved of the project on the condition that the right turn lane from Pine Street onto Cascade be preserved.
The council approved the plan despite Sno-Cap owner Olan Ford's concerns that the elimination of six head-in parking spaces could adversely affect his business.
Two trees next to the drive-in will be removed according to the plan.
The $170,000 project is to be funded by $130,000 from the county -- $50,000 of which is a county-administered grant awarded to Sisters. Adjacent property owners are contributing a total of $40,000 to the project, which is set to begin this spring.
