Letters to the Editor

To the Editor:

Wayne Scott is in trouble with the city council again for his Mt. Shadow RV Park.

This time it's a building -- last time a white vinyl fence.

Personally, I'd like to see the city take this guy to the cleaners...

I'd have to warn them however... he's used to getting his way. He told me when we had a dispute (over landscaping at Mt. Shadow RV) that I didn't want a legal battle because he never loses.

If you need proof, look at the fence that still stands.

He talked his way out of that violation, and he'll talk his way out of this one.

Good luck,

To the Editor:

I am writing to you about the new "Space Age" gas station that has just moved into our town. I think that it ruins the "old west" atmosphere of our town.

There is nothing space age about Sisters, and it gives visitors the wrong idea our small town, especially when they see that first when they are driving in.

I feel that we should do something about it. Maybe change the name of the station or somewhere along those lines.

Sincerely,

Justin Little

To the Editor:

I would like to take a moment to thank all of the people in the Sisters community who are involved in the SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) volunteer reading program. Forty volunteers come in once a week for a half hour to an hour to read one-on-one with children in kindergarten, first and second grades, taking time out of their busy schedules.

This program is only able to happen because of the wonderful people who support the program. From the sponsors who help fund the program, to the elementary school teachers and staff who support the program in every possible way, this is a program primarily designed to encourage reading and promote learning. I also want to thank the several volunteers who have helped in recruiting volunteers.

Last, but certainly not least, I want to thank Alice Adams and Nan Miller for teaching me everything that I needed to know in order to run the program effectively. Now that I am doing this for a second year, I feel much more comfortable, but it is all due to Nan and Alice always answering my endless questions.

Thank you to all the SMART readers in the Sisters community for being so committed; you are appreciated!

Sincerely,

Chera Reinertson

To the Editor:

Similar to special education, our Sisters School District is fortunate to have great counselor, teacher and parent efforts to support our students and program development for the talented and gifted.

We have a talented and gifted parent advisory group as well as the Parents of Special Education advisory group. One area under current development is our conservative identification of TAG students in grades kindergarten through the second grade. Last week we completed our first ability testing for previously referred students in grades K-6.

Our staff and parents do a lot of constructive work through various committees and work groups. We had a Saturday workshop for our staff who are on the TAG committee this January. Three members of this committee are also parents of talented and gifted students.

I am very impressed and proud of the super dedication to our students that school staffs, parents and community members have made in Sisters. Additional evidence of our teamwork and accomplishments of staff and parents has been seen by the great work done so far on developing an alternative calendar for our school district. The next big area of focus will be to develop a middle school program for students. Our current and future challenge will be to manage so much change with limited resources.

Thank you, staff and parents for helping your public school succeed.

Tim Comfort

Principal, Sisters Elementary School
