Builders look for volunteers

Habitat for Humanity volunteers are looking for a few more dedicated nail-pounders to help them finish construction of the organization's big new thrift store on Main Avenue in Sisters.

Crews have braved cold and snow since early December to work on the building.

"We've basically got it framed and we're working on the siding and interior partitions," said Habitat president Bruce Vaughan.

According to Vaughan, the volunteer construction crews have been very dedicated, stopping only in the face of major snow storms, but more volunteers are needed to get the job done.

Vaughan said an optimum crew is about 8 to 10 workers each day; lately they've been working with four to seven.

"We're working five days a week," Vaughan said. "Most of the folks that are working on it are retired folks and they can't work every day of the week.

"Anybody who can pound a nail" is welcome, Vaughan said; no special carpentry skills are required.

Bob Sherman, head of the Habitat building committee, noted that the crews might start taking a day off during the week and working Saturdays instead to make it easy for working people to volunteer some time.

Bruce Vaughan can be reached at 595-6967.
