Police nab fugitive after chase

Police arrested Curtis Lee Ladd, 39, of Sisters February 9, after he led a Sisters police officer on a chase over snowy backroads northeast of Sisters.

According to police reports, a Sisters officer saw Ladd speeding eastbound on West Adams Street at about 8 p.m. Sunday. Ladd allegedly turned south on Ash Street, then east on Main Avenue, running a stop sign.

The officer followed Ladd at an excess of 50 miles per hour on North Locust to Camp Polk Road and turned on his emergency lights. Ladd allegedly ignored the lights, continuing along Wilt Road.

Police followed Ladd at about 45 miles per hour on the snow-covered road to Junipine Road, where Ladd turned south.

According to police reports, Ladd had trouble controlling his vehicle and nearly struck a northbound Sisters ambulance. The officer turned on his siren and continued his pursuit of Ladd for about a mile to the driveway at Ladd's residence on Fairmile Road.

Police reported that, as he neared the driveway, Ladd "gave (the officer) the middle finger," then lost control of his vehicle, turning into the driveway and plowing into the snowy shoulder.

According to police reports, the officer approached the vehicle, told Ladd he was under arrest and ordered him to get out of his vehicle, keeping his hands visible. Ladd allegedly refused and cursed at the officer.

Police reported that the officer tried for about a minute to get Ladd out of the car. When Ladd allegedly dropped his hands out of sight and refused to raise them when ordered, the officer allegedly warned him that he would "cap stun" him with self-defense spray.

When Ladd still refused to comply, the officer sprayed him through the driver's window.

When the officer again ordered Ladd out of the car, he rolled out onto the ground and put his hands behind his back. The officer handcuffed Ladd and asked a woman at the residence to bring a cold wet cloth out to wash Ladd's face.

Ladd allegedly refused to identify himself, but police identified him through dispatch and the woman at the scene confirmed his identity.

Ladd had outstanding warrants in Deschutes County for failure to appear, criminal trespass and telephonic harassment and in Marion County for parole violation and fourth-degree assault. He was taken into custody on those warrants and for attempting to elude a police officer, reckless driving, resisting arrest and failure to display a driver's license.
