City to experiment with holiday traffic detour

In hopes of breaking holiday gridlock on Cascade Avenue, the City of Sisters, Oregon Department of Transportati

on and Deschutes National Forest have devised a detour to route traffic around the downtown bottleneck.

The detour will be in place Memorial Day Weekend for westbound traffic only.

Westbound drivers can either go through town on Cascade Avenue as usual, or they can follow signs right on Locust and left up Main Avenue.

Signs will direct drivers to turn right from Main Avenue onto Pine Street, lead them north to Forest Service Road 100, where they can turn left and proceed back to Highway 20 west of town.

While the detour is in place, eastbound traffic will not be allowed to enter Forest Service Road 100.

According to Sisters Public Works Director Gary Frazee, the detour is an experiment to see if a local detour can take some of the late holiday traffic pressure off Cascade Avenue
