Hyde named Advisor of the Year

Sisters Middle/High School teacher and advisor Glenda Hyde has been named Oregon Activity Advisor of the

Year.

"Being chosen is exciting," Hyde said, but "I view this as recognition and honor for the whole school. I couldn't do the kinds of things I was able to do this year without the support and inspiration from a really terrific staff."

As an advisor, Hyde works with three clubs: the Honor Society, the Junior Honor Society and VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America). According to Hyde, she coordinates the students' efforts and places a heavy emphasis on their involvement in community service activities. Hyde also teaches classes in Food Science, Food Service and Child Development.

The presidents from each of the three clubs Hyde advises submitted her nomination to the Oregon Association of Student Councils.

"People are probably recognized for having an active club, and I had three active clubs," Hyde said.

Hyde said this year she re-focused the honor society.

"In the past, it had been largely honorary -- not much got done."

Inspired by an article about combating "senioritis," and by the national society's desire to see local societies involved in community service, Hyde said, "I presented a program to help the students develop into productive citizens.

"I like to encourage students to have a giving philosophy, and teach them to push and do their personal best," she said.

Hannah Colburn, the Junior Honor Society president, wrote the paper which was submitted to the sponsoring organization which detailed Hyde's accomplishments.

Colburn was not particularly surprised that Hyde was chosen Advisor of the Year.

"She deserved it," he said. "She helped me personally in many ways, and provided that help and support to a lot of other people. She teaches people how to be leaders, to take care of mistakes, and the values she encourages and promotes for each individual."

Hyde's High School Honor Society averaged over three projects per month. Last year it hosted an honor roll ice cream social, during which all students on the honor roll (3.0-4.0 GPA) congregated for free ice cream. The soc

iety contacted the Salvation Army during Christmas time and involved the students in gift-buying for needy children in the community.

The Junior Honor Society held a Valentine fund-raiser that paid for their field trip to OMSI in Portland.

VICA, a group of students working in professional/technical areas, took second and third place in a regional skills competition
