A five-person firefighting crew made quick work of a quarter-acre blaze near Indian Ford Campground on Friday, July 18.
The blaze, which officials say was caused by someone smoking, was called in at 2:45 p.m. by the Hinkle Butte Lookout. The fire, which broke out in a blind spot of the Black Butte tower, burned one mile to the north of Indian Ford Campground. Still wind conditions aided firefighters, and the blaze never threatened the campground.
Mike Carnahan, assistant fire management officer at Sisters Ranger District, emphasized the importance of fire safety in the summer months.
"Don't flip your cigarettes and dump your barbecues," he said. "Be careful in the woods."
