Little Leaguers turn in scrappy performance

Sisters Little League All-Stars, led by pitching ace Pat Burke, kept their championship hopes alive through last week.

Going into Tuesday's major league consolation bracket game against Hood River Tuesday, July 22, Sisters needed two wins to make the finals. Hood River previously handed Sisters its only loss of the tourney on Friday, July 18. Sisters held the game close until the fourth inning when Hood River exploded for eight runs, going on to win 12-2.

That was the only black mark on a stellar week of play.

In their first game against Columbia Thursday, July 17, Burke one-hit Sisters' opponent and contributed a home run to a Sisters offensive onslaught that culminated in a 12-0 shutout.

Sisters won a tough pitching duel against Bend North to win 3-1 Saturday, behind a 10 strikeout, two-hit performance by Burke. The Sisters Little Leaguers battled back from the brink of elimination in their Sunday game against Willow Creek. Sisters trailed the whole game before putting together an 11th hour four-run rally in the sixth inning to tie the game at seven.

Sisters pushed a run across in the bottom of the extra frame to take the win.

They rode their momentum into Monday's contest with Bend South, playing tough defense in a 4-1 win.

The victor of the Sisters-Hood River rematch faces a tough road. Redmond and The Dalles remained undefeated Monday night.

The winner of Sisters-Hood River was to face the loser of Monday's Redmond-The Dalles contest in a bid to make the finals.

Sisters has hosted 13 Little League teams in the District 5 all-star tournament all week at the Baptist Church ball fields.

Opening Day Ceremonies were held Thursday, July 17, as 13 teams took to the perfectly groomed fields where they were welcomed to the tournament and vowed, win or lose, to always do their best.
