Ten-month-old Bailey Miles walked out of the Jefferson Wilderness "on her own four paws" after search and rescue teams from Deschutes and Jefferson counties rescued the female yellow lab from a crevasse of rock and ice.
According to Deputy Dave Dobbler of Deschutes County Search and Rescue, Donald Miles and a companion were hiking with Bailey about two miles above Carl Lake at about 12:30 p.m. on July 15 when the dog slid about 20 feet into the crevasse.
Miles tried but failed to get her out and he and his hiking companion walked down to the trailhead to call for help on a cellular phone.
Jefferson County authorities called for mutual aid from the Deschutes County Search and Rescue Mountain Rescue Team. Seven members of that team and eight members of the Jefferson County (Camp Sherman) Search and Rescue Team hiked into the area.
They accomplished the rescue at about 12:30 a.m. on July 16.
Dobbler reported that Bailey "was uninjured... and she was very glad to see the rescue team and her master."
