News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Sisters chapter of National Honor Society, an organization for elite, active students, is looking forward to an ambitious agenda this year.
"We've got enthusiastic members that are full of ideas," said advisor Glenda Hyde, who earned the title of Oregon Activity Advisor of the Year for 1996-97.
The members of NHS - selected on the criteria of scholarship, leadership, service, and character - participate in service projects around the school and community including ice cream socials for honor roll students, taking local children trick-or-treating, chopping and stacking wood for the elderly, reading books to children and tutoring sessions.
"We're really trying to expand more and more out into the community with our service projects," Hyde said. "We're very willing to be silent workers, but it is discouraging when hard work goes unnoticed."
Each member is encouraged to provide new ideas for projects. Over 40 events are planned for this school year.
"It's tough to keep up," said secretary Sara Haynes, "but everything runs smoothly and efficiently."
At the end of the school year, the members are evaluated for the tasks they have accomplished and what activities they have participated in. Members deemed "active" wear gold cords during graduation ceremonies.
