Police arrest man after bedroom standoff

Sheriff's deputies, backed up by Sisters and Black Butte Ranch Police, arrested Todd Michael Brown at a home in Crossroads November 11, after he allegedly held them off for a half hour with a knife and a ski pole.

According to Deschutes County Deputy Rob Short, police responded to a domestic complaint at 14572 N. Bluegrass Lane at about 7 p.m. Brown, who had one outstanding felony warrant and two misdemeanor warrants, allegedly holed up in a small upstairs bedroom with a knife and a ski pole he had been using as a fireplace poker.

According to Short, a sheriff's deputy talked to Brown through the locked bedroom door for about 20 minutes while Sisters and Black Butte officers watched the bedroom window from below to prevent Brown's escape.

The discussion was to no avail, Short reported.

"He basically made it very clear that if we wanted him we'd have to come in and get him," Short said.

According to Short, Brown told the officers, "if I'm going to jail, it's going to be for something good."

Deputies ultimately kicked the door in, and allegedly found Brown sitting on the bed holding a knife to his wrist. According to Short, a deputy was able to talk Brown into casting aside the knife and the ski pole, but when officers moved to take him into custody, Brown allegedly jumped up on the bed and challenged the officers to come after him.

At that point, Short reported, deputies used pepper spray on Brown. The spray affected Brown, Short said, but didn't stop him from trying to karate-kick a deputy. According to Short, a deputy then struck Brown in the legs with a baton, subdued him, got him handcuffed and took him outside.

Brown was taken into custody on the warrants, including the felony warrant for violation of a release agreement. He was also booked on charges of menacing and harassment and two counts of resisting arrest.
