News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
To the Editor:
Congratulations to the Sisters Outlaws, to Coach Bob Macauley and to all his assistants. In the state 3-A football quarter-final play-off game last Friday night at Parker Stadium in Corvallis, the Outlaws showed everyone what "true grit" really means.
A shoulder dislocation in the first offensive series of the game took out our starting quarterback. It appeared a disaster was upon us. I agonized for the team, but as a dad, it was especially painful watching the coach put his injured quarterback-son into the ambulance and return to coaching the game as the ambulance headed for the hospital.
Then, all of a sudden, we were down 14-0 and things were looking pretty dismal.
But the Outlaws didn't roll over and give up. The injury to the quarterback seemed to galvanize the team. Chris Olson played very well as he stepped into the unenviable position of backup quarterback, and both the of offense and the defense dug deep within themselves and played some of their best football of the season. The game ended in a 14-14 tie, forcing an overtime in which Sisters; came very close to pulling off an upset.
I couldn't have been more proud watching the effort the Outlaws made. They didn't simply make a respectable showing. After falling behind 14-0, they re-grouped and out-played number-two ranked Junction City for the rest of the game.
Sisters High School can be very proud of its part in producing some terrific young men who played some terrific football this season. And they'll will be back!

To the Editor:
My father was a high school head football coach for over 30 years and I have been watching high school football for over 40 years. I don't believe that I have ever seen a better game or emotional performance than the Sisters/Junction City game.
To single out any individual performance would slight a tremendous team effort. If this game is an indication of the skill, talent and heart that future Outlaws teams will possess, we had better start raising money for additional bleachers right now.
Congratulations Outlaws!

A very informative meeting was recently held with Sisters residents and Pine Meadow Ranch owners, Steve McGhehey and Doug Sokol. The purpose of the meeting was to begin communication between developers and Sisters residents.
The main issue discussed was how to provide "view corridors" from Pine Street and for future residents of the development. Parks, cluster housing, open space, along with a perimeter walking, bike trail were discussed as ways to accomplish view corridors.
Other design details are: phasing the development, starting with the commercial then high density then last to be built would be residential, bungalow/craftsmen-style homes with maximum building height of 24 feet, houses along Pine Street would have a 17 feet maximum building height, using 17-foot and 24-foot poles with flags to aid in house placement for view corridors.
A three-dimensional clay bubble plan is also being developed to show the public.
Mr. McGhehey cited his development of the Indian Ford ridge and Metolius River Resort as examples of his developing standards. These planned unit developments (PUD) have a master design that allows more flexibility for house arranging, density, required open space and assures future residents what is planned is what they'll get.
City of Sisters PUD requirements begin on page 58 of the Sisters Union Area Zoning Ordinances No. 251 A. Copies of the zoning and comprehensive plan can be bought from City Hall for the cost of printing them. These documents are very interesting reading and will guide all future City of Sisters development.
We are in the beginning stages of determining how the new Sisters Village will affect the quality of life for Sisters and surrounding communities. The developers have demonstrated they are seeking input. Future meetings will be announced.
Happy Thanksgiving!

In response to Jenny Denzer's letter (The Nugget, November 12): Your Aunt Mary was very fortunate to be able to die with her version of dignity and have someone call Him to assist her.
Was He there to make sure she was not hooked up to any unwanted life-sustaining measures?
I know a woman in a Salem hospital who is not having her directives observed by the hospital. He isn't serving her at all.
While she had the strength, she ripped out unwanted tubes. She finally tried to escape and fell. A hip was broken and surgery ensued. Pneumonia followed. She is now a vegetable.
He has at least been able to witness all this and the disappearance of her insurance. I wonder what He has in store for her now?
Deliver me from Him.
