News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Old-fashioned street lights will pop up on street corners in Sisters' commercial district throughout the summer.
The city has received a $58,628 grant from the Rural Investment Fund to install street lights along Cascade, Hood and Main avenues. Obtaining the grant was one of the major projects of the Sisters Community Improvement Commission.
The city will install 24 lights, with engineering assistance from Central Electric Cooperative. A total of 28 sites have been selected; the final sites will be determined by feasibility of installation.
The lights, which are on 12-foot poles, with a 90-degree arm adorned with scroll work and a shaded lamp, are manufactured by Sternberg Vintage Lighting of Oak Park, Illinois.
According to City Planner Neil Thompson, they will be placed in city right-of-way along the sidewalks. Plans call for two lights per block on each side of Cascade Avenue, and two per block on the north side of Hood Avenue and two per block on the south side of Main Avenue.
Thompson said the installations should start in May. The city will dig trenches, lay conduit and put up bases. After that, public works personnel will put up the lights over the summer as they have time available outside their regular duties.
