News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
To the Editor:
I have just returned from what was one of the most enjoyable concerts I have ever been to. It was the second concert of the Starry Nights Concert series. The auditorium was filled with what seemed to be the entire town of Sisters. The comedy music video of the children thanking the sponsors was absolutely fantastic.
As I sat in my chair and laughed, clapped, stomped my feet and shed some tears as T. Graham Brown spoke about why he wrote his most recent songs, I thought about how lucky I am to live in a town that cares so much about our schools, our children - my children.
The group of people that put together this event truly deserve our thanks as a community. I can tell you that the number of volunteer hours that these fine people put in are beyond belief. There is so much that goes into making these concerts happen. As a sponsor and a spectator we have the easy part. We write a check and sit back and enjoy the show. The Starry Nights Committee members work endless hours to make sure the performers who also donate their time feel our gratitude. They all do and they all love Sisters and what we are doing for our schools.
As the husband of one of the co-chairs, I know that I don't always support her as I should when she is making these concerts come to life.
But when it all comes together and I see everyone having a great time and feeling as good as I do about our schools and our town and the kind of people who live here - doers, people that make things happen. Then I know what it is all for.
The Starry Nights Concerts have raised over $100,000 for our schools. Money that allows our kids to have the advantages of what larger school districts have.
Thank you Sisters Starry Nights Committee for all you do. And a special thanks to my wife Susan.
Sincerely,
Phil Arends
