Camp Sherman's Road District 18 will be funded next year - and funds will be available to keep Deputy Dave Blann on the job.
Elaine Henderson, Jefferson County Clerk, reported that the Road District 18 election in Camp Sherman on May 19 gathered more than the 50 percent turnout required to be a valid election.
The vote approved a levy in excess of $8,800 for fiscal year 1998-99 for maintenance of roads in the Camp Sherman area. With it, there is now a working total of over $17,000 for the coming year.
Up to $10,000 of this money has been pledged by the Road District 18 committee to be used in maintaining Deputy Sheriff Dave Blann's on-site position at Camp Sherman. Among many other tasks, Deputy Blann does snow-plowing and culvert clearing for this area of Jefferson County.
The positive vote (90 percent) was never in doubt. But until this week, there was a possibility that the vote could go the way of the Deschutes County Library District - overwhelming passage, but insufficient turnout.
Final results are also posted for Camp Sherman's voting last month for Jefferson County Sheriff. Sheriff Jack Jones polled a whopping 81 percent (104 votes) from the Camp Sherman electorate. Sean Casey had 12 percent (15 votes) and Jim Adkins drew only 7 percent (9 votes).
County-wide Adkins drew 49 percent, Jones 41 percent, and Casey 10 percent.
Adkins and Jones face each other in a runoff election next November.
