News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Three Sisters High School students were honored Tuesday, June 9, for their contributions to the AAA Senior High Safety Communications Program.
Slater Dixon, Eli Pyke and Brandi Rowat were award winners for their individual video productions promoting safety.
Dixon won National Award Merit Certificate for his video on airplane safety. His video featured guidelines for safe air travel, including what to do in case of an emergency while on board, the dangers of using electronic equipment such as computers and CD players while flying, and other basic safety tips. Dixon placed in the top four among thousand of entries at the national level.
"It's great that I placed at the national level," he said. "I was surprised that my video was sent directly to nationals and was not considered at the state level."
Pyke was an Oregon/Idaho winner for his video on the proper use of safety belts. At the outset of his video he showed fully padded football players colliding on the field to illustrate how vulnerable car passengers are without adequate protection, such as safety belts. His first place prize included a gift certificate from Fred Meyer for $325.
Rowat focused her video on the importance of the correct usage of child safety seats. She placed third in the Oregon/Idaho division and took home a $25 gift certificate.
According to Linda Riser, the AAA Oregon/Idaho District Office Supervisor, the Senior High School Communications Contest helps prevent traffic related deaths of children and teens by helping kids learn valuable safety lessons. The contest offers older students the opportunity to creatively present safety concepts through a choice of mediums - audio, video, brochures, editorials, cartoons, or computer art, as well as posters.
Riser pointed out that it is a real tribute to the program that three students from a school of Sisters' size were winners.
Technology teacher Jim Reiss encouraged his students to enter the contest.
