News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Sisters Schools Foundation has distributed $31,500 to programs in all three Sisters schools.
The foundation board, in its September 17 meeting, provided funds for technology, classsroom equipment, athletic equipment and a high school building project.
Funding included $2,500 for a new soundboard for the elementary school music program. According to foundation president Rod Morris, another $3,000 went to the elementary school for "math manipulatives" - hands-on math equipment such as blocks, rulers and scales.
"It's product not just for this year," Morris noted. "It's in (the school's) supply."
The foundation contributed $2,000 to the sixth grade outdoor school and funded equipment for art, athletics and video programs.
High school athletics received $6,900 to pay for equipment and uniforms, gear which the school district no longer funds.
"Each athletic program has to raise that money (for equipment and uniforms)," Morris said. "This is to assist that."
According to Morris, funds for athletics are proportioned through a formula based on the number of students participating in each sport.
Another $5,000 was earmarked for a building project on the east wing of the high school to expand the facilities for the arts program. According to Morris, the building will particularly benefit classes in ceramics.
The high school's math and science programs also received $1,200 and $2,200 respectively.
The foundation held a reserve of $4,500 for further distribution in 1998-99 and placed $12,500 in its endowment fund.
"That (the endowment) is a long-term vision," Morris said. "The ideal would be to have the foundation be self-funded."
