Sisters gather in Sisters

Women from all over the U.S. and from as far away as Japan will gather in Sisters over the weekend of October 2-4 for the first the Sisters in Sisters Celebration

The event will unite sisters, sisters-in-law, sorority sisters, and "sisters in heart," best friends. The celebration is presented by the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce and Sisters International, Inc. of Portland.

The Sisters in Sisters weekend promises fun and inspiration with activities, workshops, motivating speakers, entertainment and plenty of laid-back talk time, according to organizers.

Over 200 participants are expected, coming from as far away as North Carolina, New Hampshire, Alaska Minnesota and Japan.

Activities include hiking, horseback riding, golf, fishing, and other outdoor-related opportunities.

Workshops will focus on capturing and preserving family history, understanding birth order and family patterns, fostering closer ties between generations, and more.

A women's health fair, sponsored by St. Charles Medical Center and open to the public, will coincide with the celebration.

Keynote speaker Stacy Allison, the first American woman to climb Mount Everest, will speak at the Friday evening welcome dinner. Allison, who has a younger sister, relates the achievement of climbing Everest to the challenges and struggles women face in their everyday lives. Lighter notes follow with Motherlode, a nationally acclaimed vocal group.

Saturday evening features a Western barbecue, the sisterly musings of stand-up comic Leigh Ann Jasheway and a variety performance showcasing talented sisters.

The wrap-up Sunday luncheon will be highlighted with author, newspaper columnist and "relating" expert Jann Mitchell.

Limited walk-in registration for the event is available Friday, October 2, only from noon to 3 p.m. at the Village Green.
