Sisters Library needs more volunteers

The Sisters Library needs volunteers to staff the branch through its new expanded hours. The library is now open on Mondays and future plans include opening Sundays and some evenings.

More hours and attrition, with some volunteers moving away or traveling during the winter season, has created a shortage, according to Sisters librarian Peg Bermel.

Volunteers perform a variety of services including shelving and checking shelves to ensure that books are filed correctly. Angie Rands has been a volunteer at the Sisters library for eight years.

Rands said that volunteers do "whatever needs doing the most at the moment. Sometimes the cart is full and the books need to go back on the shelves."

Rands also spends time responding to customer requests for books and helping customers use the computers to determine availability and order books. Other ongoing duties include updating computer records, and cleaning books.

Rands likes dealing with customers as well as the library staff."I find it very enjoyable," she said. "I like being around books of course.

"You do what you can in the time that you're here. Peg and Sandy (McDonald) are very positive about your work."

Volunteers work one two hour shift every other week.
