News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
After years of trying, the City of Sisters will move to a new city hall - in another three years.
The Sisters City Council approved the purchase of the Multnomah Press building at 204 West Adams Street on Thursday, October 8. As part of the deal, the city will trade the former bowling alley building next door for $375,000. Multnomah Press is currently leasing that building.
The city will use the $219,000 in its city hall fund and borrow $36,000 from its equipment reserve fund to complete the purchase.
Multomah Press will lease the building back at $5,600 per month for three years while the company finds a site to build a new facility. The payments will pay back the borrowed funds with interest. The payments will also build a remodel fund for the new city hall.
According to Mayor Steve Wilson, the building will require modifications to meet Americans With Disabilities Act requirements.
Wilson acknowledged that the 8,000-square-foot building is bigger than what the city needs. He said any unused space could be rented by community and county agencies.
The city had for several years planned to move city hall to the former Memory Lanes Bowling Alley building, which was donated to the city nearly six years ago. However, remodel costs of nearly $500,000 made that project unfeasible.
Earlier this year, the city agreed to lease that building to Multnomah Press with an option to buy.
